Why didn't they just bring him back?
Probably the same reason they didn’t bring Andrew Garfield back, they want to do their own version.

I still think it was extremely moronic to kill him off in Infinity War just for a cheap cries from the audience. They knew since 2016 that his sequel was coming out in July 2019.

Yeah... but did anyone other than rubes ever believe that any of the people dusted would be staying dead? Anyone with half a functioning brain knows they didn't "kill him off" any more than they killed off Doctor Strange or Black Panther or the Guardians or any other new character that will be carrying the MCU after the OG Avengers retire.

I prefer Spider-Man to be closer to the Spider-Man I watched on the Saturday morning cartoon that aired on Fox in the 90s. High school age is cool for the journey following the kid growing into a man, but I prefer Peter Parker attending college and working as a photographer at The Daily Bugle.
90's Fox Spiderman is my Spiderman too.

For me personally I just haven't been won over by Tom Holland. I find him annoying instead of endearing. His voice is just grating. I'm hoping he becomes more mature as the films progress and he more closely resembles the PP you mentioned above from the old animated series.

Also I know they purposefully left out the Uncle Ben stuff this time around because they thought it would be redundant, but without it I think you leave a big gaping hole in the origin. I don't sense the motivation in this Spiderman as well. He just wants to be a hero 'because'.

you leave a gaping hole perhaps but it's one that very few people who are watching this movie are going to be unaware of what fills it so that's not too big a problem. Also his own movie didn't outline his motivation but his first appearance which was Civil War did with Tony's meeting with him and the modern take on the "with great power comes great responsibility line". It isn't more fleshed out than that but since he's a kid in this universe it doesn't really need to be.

Agree to disagree on Holland himself I can easily see why people wouldn't like him but to me he just works as spiderman. I might prefer Maguire slightly to be honest but Holland has a unique energy to him which I like as well.

One last note though the cartoon spiderman you guys are on about is still best spiderman to me as well.

If a movie is the first of a series and is tasked with introducing a character, then it needs to establish all the basics and lay the foundation for the character and the world they inhabit. Yes the world knows who Spiderman is and how he became Spiderman but we don't know this Spiderman.

They didn't need to reintroduce Uncle Ben and show us the murder again but to not even mention it? It's the foundation for the character's entire motivation. It would be like penning a Batman movie that failed to reference the Wayne murder. Without it an essential piece of the puzzle is missing. It's what defines his mission. It's what propelled him to act. He takes on a whole different identity if he's just a normal dude that wanted to do some good.

It's not nearly as personal.

I think Tom Holland plays a decent Spider-man and I think he's likeable but I agree with this. I just hate how much they seemed to sideline Uncle Ben and his importance(Over Iron Man basically lol). Hell even Aunt May feels sidelined. Parker dies in Infinity War and you would think the last thing he'd say is something related to his Aunt or Uncle, but nope he apologizes to Tony..."Tell Aunt May I'm sorry" or something like that would've been way better and in line with the Spider-man I personally know.

What they did with Spider-man in this if Sony did this....you know damn well fans would've torn that company a new asshole.

To me the MCU Spider-man feels exactly that, MCU Spider-man. It's the Disney-fied, "Fun" version that is Tony's sidekick. Homecoming was basically a glorified Disney channel movie honestly and not the real Spider-man

I dunno lol I'm just bitter about this because Into the Spiderverse was 10 times the Spider-man movie Homecoming was(and will probably be still over this new movie).
