Things you hate about movies you love

Simple topic. Something that bugs you about a movie(s) you love.

Two examples for me. Both characterization changes in sequels.

Tom Manning in Hellboy: The Golden Army

In the first Hellboy he and HB come to an understanding, sharing cigars after the fight with Kroenen. Then in Golden Army that character development is lost. He's not even back to being the bureaucratic hardass of the first movie. He's just an ineffectual toady practically begging HB to be good. When they quit the BRPD at the end I feel bad for Manning.

Marcus Brody in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade

Marcus Brody when first introduced in Raiders seems like an aged version of Indy. He says were he five years younger he'd go after the Ark himself. I get they wanted Henry Sr. to fill the mentor role in Crusade, but they didn't need to turn Marcus into a bumbling fool. That doesn't mean I don't appreciate Denholm Ellliot's performance, I just wish they didn't change the character for the sake of comedic relief.

I'll do A recent one.

Spider-man:Homecoming
Why have they taken so much from Miles Morales and put it into this version of Peter? Miles has a similar relationship to Tony that Peter has with Tony. Miles had his suit handed to him like Peter did. And lets not even get into how Ned looks exactly like Ganke.

Re: Things you hate about movies you love

The movie in question: The Mask

The problem: it spawned one of the worst sequels of all time

serious answer: I found Cameron Diaz's character very boring compared to all the zaniness of the rest of the film and so didn't particularly care for the romance between her and Carrey's character (not a big fan of romance in movies in general though so )

The Dark Knight Rises - Talia Al Ghul's death scene.

Ugh, Marion Cotillard was so awful there. It's a rare example of Christopher Nolan slacking, I still scratch my head and wonder why he never re-shot it or how he could of been satisfied with the scene. I am going to chalk it up to him being exhausted and just wanted to conclude the trilogy so he could move on to different things.

Re: Things you hate about movies you love

As much as I love the movie Stargate it is a typical Roland Emmerich movie in that it's filled with every single god damn movie cliche ever invented. From the nerdy scientist with allergies getting the incredibly hot way to good for him girl in the end to the tragically flawed ex military veteran over coming his personal demons to save the day.

That being said Emmerich has probably made a billion dollars cutting and pasting his movies together soooo... yeah... he's not changing his format and according to his bank account he shouldn't.

Bane and Harvey Dent's death were like that too though. I think it's just Nolan's style. Where most directors slow it down, play dramatic music, and milk the moment for every second it's worth, Nolan just seems to go boom dead next scene.

It seems to happen to often to be an oversight or as you put it exhaustion.

edit: just rewatched the clip, I thought she died when the car crashed and forgot about the dialogue you're right her performance could have used some... let's just say improvement. So perhaps you're right about exhaustion or maybe it was purely lack of time, hell maybe Nolan liked it, I guess we'll never know.

I would disagree. Harvey's death had a nice dramatic build up and superb acting from Eckhart, Bale and especially Oldman. There's really not much I can fault with that scene, it's one of my favourites from TDK.

As for Bane's death I can see why it might irk some but I enjoyed the surprise factor of it.

Either way neither scene had Marion Cotillard half assing it so I can't agree with you.

EDIT - I just saw your edit

lol yeah for some reason I thought she died in the crash and that was it. Maybe my mind blocked it

I also may have done a bad job explaining what I meant. I LOVE the Harvey Dent death scene and even, though to a lesser extent, the outta nowhere (trademark Randy Orton) Bane death.

I was just pointing out that most other directors would have had Dent fall in slow motion or highlighted his fall or added something cheesy to milk the moment. Filming the deaths the way he did was a clear directorial decision and given the "real world" theme Nolan was going for in his Batman movies I think it worked brilliantly.

I wasn't trying to say I didn't like it. I loved it.

edit: basically most directors would have done this...

Re: Things you hate about movies you love

The one that jumps out like a sore thumb to me is Guardians Of The Galaxy 2. Ego has that great line about killing Peter's mother, something like "I hated that I had to put that tumor in her head", and he freaks out and they have a big fight, and that's awesome. However, it reaches a point where they're really setting up Peter giving him the what for, and he says "you shouldn't have killed my mom and squished my Walkman."

They had a great thing going, and it was humor injected into a scene at the absolute WORST time. They did NOT need the bit about the Walkman. It killed all the dramatic tension. I LOVE Marvel, but they have to understand something that they don't seem to understand, which is that sometimes, situations aren't funny. I like humor being in these movies, but they have GOT to understand that there comes a point where there is a WRONG time to use humor, and that was it. That was a tension killer.

Return Of The Jedi, the Ewoks. Need I say more?

I fully agree with this and it's annoying cause they actually had a moment where they integrated humour into the fight perfectly with the bigger ego vs Pac-Man moment as that was foreshadowed earlier. GOTG2 in general seemed to be trying too hard to be funny at times and this is a heavy reason why I personally prefer the original (although GOTG2 is pretty damn good)
