Will I be really lost if I do that, though? I remember wider stuff about Trek from growing up but I haven't seen any of the series for years.

Not really. TNG isn't as continutiy heavy as say DS9, which had a very serialized format. Plus, season 3 had a different creative staff behind it, so in someways feels like a soft reboot of the show. The only episode I would recommend from season 2 are the 2 I mentioned. The former brings some character development to Data and the latter is the first appearance of the Borg.

That explains a lot, I obviously have later TNG fresher in mind than earlier, but then if the creative changes that explains why those opening episodes are so much worse than I remember TNG being. Not really interested in Data but the first appearance of the Borg sounds like a sweet moment to revisit so I'll definitely watch that.

Re: TV Thread finally renewed whew Season 3

Just watched the first episode of Season 2 of Designated Survivor. I keep being in two minds about this show. I like it, and the cast is great and then sometimes I don't and it kind of bores me. I mostly enjoyed Season 1, but there were a few things I didn't like.

I'm hoping this season picks up and it really grips me. The first episode of S2 was enjoyable. The first half of Season 1 gripped the hell out of me, and my interest kind of waned off part-way through before it picked up again.

Does feel very West Wing now. That's not a bad thing though, I absolutely loved West Wing.

I still can't stop picturing Kiefer Sutherland as Jack Bauer though, and it fucks with my head him playing the President

American Vandal is awesome. They managed to tell a completely hilarious and ridiculous story that's a great mystery. Oh and it makes you think about some bigger picture things towards the end. There's 8 episodes and most are around 30 minutes long. A good way to spend a few nights for sure.

Sci-Fi / dystopia fans should absolutely must watch the Brazilian / Portuguese show 3%. It's now fully dubbed in english and while it's not great dubbing, the story, plot and at least the physical acting are all worth it. (You could always watch original VO with sub-titles)

If you're not watching, then you're missing out. Good pacing, doesn't drag, characters are believable and have fleshed out back stories. The closest comparison is Hunger Games.

I as a huge trekkie would not recommend skipping the first two seasons entirely. There are some key episodes in there that are must watch episodes if you don't want to watch the whole 2 seasons. Here they are:

Season 1:

- Encounter at Far Point (sets up the primary plot thread of the entire series)
- The Naked Now (sets up a key relationship between two characters)
- Where no one has gone before (Introduces a character that will re-appear in the future)
- The Battle (Part of Captain's backstory)
- Hide and Q (More Q shenanigans)
- Datalore (Data's backstory)
- Heart of Glory
- Skin of Evil (It's a terrible episode, but must be watched for continuity)
- Conspiracy (You can skip this one but I recommend watching it)
- Neutral Zone (Introduces the Romulans)

Season 2:

- The Child (terrible episode, but they introduce a new character)
- Where Silence has lease (just watch because it's a very good sci-fi episode)
- Elementary Dear Data (sets up a plot thread that is resolved later)
- A matter of honor
- The measure of a man (This is one of Star Trek's greatest episodes but you need to be invested enough in Data to fully appreciate it)
- The Royale (a good stand alone sci-fi story)
- The Icarus Factor (some good backstory for Will Riker)
- Q Who (can't skip for continuity reasons)
- Manhunt (probably shouldn't miss because it introduces a recurring character)
- The Emissary (Wouldn't recommend skipping because it sets up Worf's backstory)
- Peak Performance (Another great episode for Data's development)

The rest can be skipped. There are bits and pieces of character interactions here and there, but honestly speaking TNG's first two seasons had more good episodes than bad and I would recommend sitting through all of it. If you don't want to, then watch the ones I've listed.

When a man's heart is full of deceit,
it burns up, dies, and a dark shadow falls over his soul.

From the ashes of a once great man has risen a curse,
a wrong that must be righted.

I have disagree. More power to you if you like those seasons and episodes, but they really were not that good. And continuity isn't a good enough reason to watch them.

I don't like all of them. Some are downright trash but imo should be muscled through for the sake of future episodes.

Many of the ones I listed above have pivotal franchise moments as well as establish character arcs that are carried forward throughout the show.
