The Orville

So I watched the first episode tonight, not expecting very much.

Yes, there was some slightly irreverent humor... and it didn't come off to me as being overly funny as a whole. But I was somewhat surprised by the seriousness that coasted along underneath the humor. In particular the tension between the captain and his XO. There were certainly jokes made at the expense of their previously failed marriage. I felt that it added something to the show, though.

It may or may not end up being a type of "Galaxy Quest" sort of show, but I think it deserves a few more looks. At least it is not "Family Guy" in space. That would have been a disaster.

Did anyone else watch this?

Any thoughts?

Re: The Orville

Sounds promising, I'll check it out tomorrow most likely.

I do know McFarlane was annoyed with fox promoting it as a comedy when you described it's genre better than them. He felt fox is setting them up to fail by drawing in people expecting FG in space while pushing away those that want a GQ type show with some moving plot points.

Looking forward to watching this On Demand. Good thing this isn't a pure comedy.

Re: The Orville

Seen clips. Looks promising. I agree way Fox are Promoting it. It gives the impression FG in Space. But it's not. That just wouldent work. It seems more genre bending then that. And their seems to be some interesting plot lines. Have to see the full episode some point. But can't find anywhere online to do so.

Re: The Orville

That's what I thought it was going to be, FG in space.

I'll watch it later, you made me interested.

Also Galaxy Quest had an interesting universe, sure it's Star Trekish but to me stood out a little more. Being like Galaxy Quest is a good thing!

Re: The Orville

Hmm. I don't know if I'm going to like this or not. The pilot episode did not overly wow me but did barely enough that I'll give it some more time. It felt and looked all a little too neat and a little too clean. I suppose the best thing is that it's not the FG in space some people feared it would be. I think the thing I liked the least about it is that it was too heavily influenced by Star Trek: TNG, from the uniforms to the characters to the captain's ready room to the bridge and even the music. Don't get me wrong, I love TNG but I don't need a clone of it. There was even a holodeck FFS. If they start doing wacky holodeck adventures then I am definitely out. It gets a meh and a maybe for now. If it's going to hold my attention, it's going to need to start breaking some of the molds established early on. There's some great sci-fi out there and I got no time for boring, cookie cutter shows.

Re: The Orville

Yeah, this show didn't blow me away, but it was so different from my expectations that I am intrigued. I think it definitely has potential.

I won't be too bothered if it ends up being a kind of Star Trek clone, as long as it doesn't get heavy handed and rely on TNG tropes and rehashed plotlines in every episode. I am going to hope for now that that is not the direction it will be headed. There will be some similarities... I just don't see a way to avoid them at this point. But if the show does set itself apart I will be happy with it.

Like others I intend to give it every chance to impress me. And I will walk away form it if it doesn't.

Re: The Orville

Just watched the first episode.

I mostly enjoyed it. Potential comes to mind. Hit and miss at times. It seems more genre familiar to a ST type clone yes. Kinda reminds me of a live action Futurama tbh. It's promising. I'm willing to give it time to develop. I think the most interesting aspect was the relationship between the captain and his XO. Potential their. Jokes made between them. It was actually more serious in tone than I expected. The way they were promoting it. Seemed more Family Guy in space. I'm so glad it's not. A lot of the characters are a bit too formulaic though. I found them amusing. Be interesting what direction they take them.

I agree at this stage it seems too clean. Borrowing from ST tropes too much. They well need to break away from them. To become it's own thing. Bit formulaic at this stage. I'm willing to give it another chance though. A lot of shows, even iconic ones. Started slow. If it becomes some sorta "Galaxy Quest" then I think it could be successful.

In terms of ratings. It did pretty solid. It got a 2.8 in demo. Tied with This is Us.
