We’ve been granted permission to do it R-rated, which for me is just like taking the cuffs off. It’s like, okay, so now we can just make the movie we want to make. It’s not like I’m going to force it to be R-rated, but if it happens to come out that way, just because of my own sensibilities, then fine. And nobody’s going to stop us. So, that’s the main thing. And I’m sure, obviously, the success of things like Deadpool and Logan have not hurt that cause. But, also, when you go back the original material, it is kind of bloody, so I’m going to embrace that.

It’s definitely going to be as practical as we can possibly make it. I love to do stuff in camera whenever I possibly can, and use CG as the amazing tool that it is, to enhance or expand upon the world, but not to use it to replace reality, when you can do it [for] real.

Neil Marshall just totally gets it.

Yeah, Neil Marshall saying these things. Not surprised. That's why when I heard he was directing, I knew it was in very good hands.

‘Hellboy’ Reboot Starring David Harbour to Land at Lionsgate

“Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen” aims to begin shooting in September

Lionsgate is in advanced negotiations to distribute the reboot of “Hellboy.”

The new film, with the working title “Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen,” stars “Stranger Things” headliner David Harbour as the title character, a demonic superhero first played by Ron Perlman in Guillermo del Toro’s 2004 original movie.

In April, “Hellboy” comic-book creator Mike Mignola announced plans for an R-rated reboot of the franchise with Neil Marshall (“The Descent”) attached to direct.

Andrew Cosby, Christopher Golden and Mignola are writing the script, a departure from Del Toro’s “Hellboy” and its 2008 sequel, “Hellboy II: The Golden Army.” The project is expected to begin production this fall.

Earlier this year, Del Toro had teased fans with talk of re-teaming with Perlman for “Hellboy 3,” but those plans fell through.

In a recent interview with TheWrap, Harbour described the reboot as “darker” and “more of a character piece.”

“It’s a character that I love, and sort of in the way, I think Mike [Mignola] and a bunch of other people saw me in ‘Stranger Things’ and wanted me to play Hellboy and I think he has some parallels to him,” Harbour said.

“He’s another complicated antihero who is not strictly good or bad, he’s just trying to do the right thing. I think he’s a demon, he’s crazy, and he’s also sweet and vulnerable and neurotic […] so there’s a lot of complexity there.”

The first “Hellboy” earned a worldwide total of $99 million at the box office and starred Perlman and Selma Blair

The sequel performed better, earning $160 million worldwide. Although the movies weren’t runaway smash hits, critics loved them, both earning a score in the 80s on Rotten Tomatoes.

'American Gods' Star Ian McShane Joins David Harbour in 'Hellboy' Reboot (Exclusive)

McShane will play Hellboy’s adoptive father, Professor Broom.

Ian McShane, currently starring on Starz’s American Gods, is joining David Harbour in Lionsgate and Millennium’s Hellboy reboot.

Harbour is toplining as the demonic hero from the Mike Mignola comic books in a new feature, titled Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen, that Neil Marshall, the horror director who broke out with The Descent and won raves for his work on Game of Thrones, is on board to helm.

The new story sees the hero squaring off against a medieval sorceress who seeks to destroy humankind.

McShane will play Hellboy’s adoptive father, Professor Broom.

The project is eyeing a September start and will shoot in the U.K. and Bulgaria.

Larry Gordon and Lloyd Levin are producing along with Mike Richardson of Dark Horse Entertainment.

McShane, who won a Golden Globe for his starring role on HBO's Deadwood, has also been winning praise for his work on American Gods, in which he plays Mr. Wednesday, an enigmatic god from the Norse myths. He also has been a steady presence in the John Wick movies, where he plays the steely-eyed owner of the boutique hotel that caters to assassins.

The Hellboy casting keeps the actor in the Lionsgate family as the studio is also behind the Wick franchise and owns Starz, the maker of American Gods.

There could not have been a greater pick to replace John Hurt.

I'm almost happy that this movie is being made now

Still salty about HBIII never happening though

I'm more excited for an R-rated Hellboy than just about any other movie.

Re: Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen (2018)

I'm excited for this movie, not a fan of Harbour but if he plays Hellboy like he did the Sheriff in Stranger Things I'll enjoy it.

I'd love to see a more veteran type character, we're sorely lacking these.

No love story will be nice, thought the love story in the other movies was pretty meh.
