Re: Comics and Graphic Novels Vol. 3: This issue...EVERYBODY DIES!

I am currently trying to finish Bleach but boy it is hard going.

I have started reading, and abandoned, this "final arc" about a dozen times. I have a soft spot for Bleach as during my midteens this was really the series that truly captured my imagination at the height of my anime fandom and so it is a series that has been seared onto my consciousness which is why I really want to finish it but this final arc is just Kubo in overdrive.

It feels like practically each and every chapter introduce a dozen new characters and concepts that actively contradict what came beforehand, the story is all over the fucking place and mysteries introduced hundreds upon hundreds of chapters earlier still remain open while he moves onto new and ludicrous twists instead.

In fact, his penchant for asspulls means that the story is never really progressing, it is just resetting over and over again. He clearly just does these asspulls so he can have his cake and eat it but it just really makes the story really unengaging because he eventually codes you to expect that whenever the story starts moving again something is just around the corner to reset all this progress.

Without the performances/music and just Kubo's dialogue... fucking hell is it horrible. Part of that might be a translation issue but I have to feel it is a big part down to him.

The art is also problematic too as while he has grown as an artist and certainly knows how to create gorgeous character designs and striking panels, I feel like he rarely respects his panel space and he wastes a lot of paper. So many fights are really hard to follow, panels often get repeated that really don't add anything and given how much of the manga is fighting, that is a real problem.

I agree with you on everything you said basically. But you should still push through to the finish the arc in one big go. The more you delay the more you will forget anything about it lol. I remember it was long as heck but I was and am glad that I did it. Even with all the faults Bleach will always remain special for me.

Haven't read any western comic for months now but been rotating between Hajime no Ippo, Kyou Kara Ore Wa!! and Shonan Junai Gumi.

I just finished reading the first chapter of Jujutsu Kaisen as I was told it was like the early chapters of Bleach. I dunno whether I agree with that from a story or character perspective as this is a pretty generically shonen set up that could be called back to many places but I do agree with that assessment from an artwork perspective. It really reminds me of the early days of Kubo's art. Not exactly the prettiest or most polished, but it has action scenes you can feel, you can feel the pace, the kineticism, the immediacy, it is like you could reach out and touch it, like you're watching one frame from a sequence about to move. Really keen to keep reading this.

Despite what you may have heard about so-called "smark marks" and the "IWC" some of us are actually here to help. All you have to do is ask.

After the Bat/Cat shit and what happened with Heroes in Crisis, he kind of brought it on himself

I heard bad things about the Heroes in Crisis as well, though I have no idea what it is even about it.

Checking top 10 best selling issues from time to time, its baffling how DC gave away the lead in a short few years after the Rebirth craze.

Heroes in crisis I liked. The twist was not done well though. I have no problem with who did it but more what they did after.

IT FUCKING HAPPENED
