Re: Hogan And Austin Had More Impact On Wrestling History Than The Rock

I just want to clarify, this column is not about ranking the three in terms of their popularity, only their impact. I do not consider popularity and impact the same thing. Rock probably was a little more popular than Austin, but Austin and Hogan drastically changed the course of wrestling history. Rock didn't change the course of history nearly to the degree Austin and Hogan did.

Re: Hogan And Austin Had More Impact On Wrestling History Than The Rock

I actually made a thread that touched on this a few years back. Similar question....if removed from history who would cause the most impact. The answer is easily Hogan with Austin behind him. Rock doesn’t even come close when it comes to impact. Remove him and little changes. What did he change? When it comes to popularity there’s no question. When it comes to his success after wrestling, there’s no question. Was he an amazing performer? Absolutely, but that’s not the topic here. I will easily place Flair, Andre, Savage, Micheals, and the Road Warriors to name a few above him when this is the criteria.

Re: Hogan And Austin Had More Impact On Wrestling History Than The Rock

Well The Rock came in just after Austin did, in terms of when they hit their peak. Its a weird argument, because its not about popularity but it still feels like a thinly veiled shot at the guy who is the biggest star Pro Wrestling has ever produced. Very, very, very few wrestlers have any kind of impact upon anything. Maybe its even more impressive that The Rock didn't change anything or do anything impactful but became as big of a star as he did despite that.

Austin started the wave, Rock rode it. Pretty simple. Because of Rocks looks and acting ability, he became a cultural icon. Hes still a pro wrestling icon, but nowhere near the level of Austin or Hogan.

Completely understand the difference between the two.

Hogan and Austin impact on wrestling was bigger than the Rock. Hogan took TWO companies to levels they have never seen before. And Austin was a major piece that drove the WWE to come back from a slump and over take competing WCW. A competing company that Hogan just took to maximum heights.

Side note: On a popularity scale. When I think of "professional wrestling", regardless of company. One name comes to mind that represents the industry. Hulk Hogan. People that never even seen or seen very little know who Hulk Hogan is. Hell even people know who Ric Flair is. I asked asked people in my office, you know who the Rock is? Had to help, to some, .... Dwayne Johnson.. the guy from Fast Furious.... yeah, yeah , oh that guy, yeah I know who that is. Yet, most of them who don't even watch wrestling knew who Ric Flair was. And he's not in movies. Go figure.

Everyone should remember that major celebrities helped to build wrestling big during Hogan and Austin's reign as well. You can't just contribute it all to Hogan and Austin without mentioning the celebrities like Cindy Lauper, Mike Tyson etc.,

I disagree Rock transcended the Buisness like no one ever did. The biggest megastar in pro wrestling history. When you think of wrestling you think of those 3 in any regard.
