WWE has it all backwards...and they have since 1992

Here's the thing. While I love Daniel Bryan to death, the one thing Vince gets right is where he puts his top champions. Brock Lesnar is a monster heavyweight; he SHOULD hold the heavyweight belt. Hell, even give Roman Reigns a run with it. Why? Here's why.

The word "HEAVYweight" should mean something. Sure, guys like Eddie, Shawn, Bret, Edge etc. have held this title, but that's not who this title was meant for.

The intercontinental Championship, and US for that matter used to go to the best workers in the business; Shawn, Bret, Perfect, Razor, Honky, Owen, hell, even before he was paralyzed by that botched piledriver, Austin had a nice little run with the Intercontinental Championship.

What was the main event of Summerslam '92? Granted it was in England, but it was Bret vs Davey Boy Smith for the Intercontinental belt. The two best WORKERS at the time were the main event. What a novel idea. I can't remember a time in WWE when that belt was that relevant since then.

Look what ECW did with the Television Title. To some, it was more important than the World title itself. Rob Van Dam held that belt for nearly two years, and only had to forfeit it due to injury. When ws the last time a midcard title, a worker's title was this important?

I was trolling, of course when I said Daniel Bryan should retire. He's the most over guy in the WWE, yes, but he's also one of the hardest workers. Give him the IC strap and have him make it relevant again. He doesn't need the world title.. he's the most over guy in the company. Let Vince have his fun with the Roman Reigns of the world, but treat guys like Daniel Bryan, Zack Ryder, Sami Zayn etc with the respect they deserve.

The intercontinental title scene has become stale. Time to make itr great again.

None of the current titles have "Heavyweight" in their name.

That aside, it's prowrestling, not UFC. If a guy's a star he should get the top belt, regardless of his weight, not kept in the midcard title scene until he packs on twenty extra pounds.

So you think it's more acceptable to put the top title on somebody who gets crickets and "this is awful" chants in the main event of Wrestlemania than the most over guy in the company? And you think WWE have it backwards? No offence, but don't go into business for yourself you don't seem to understand how maximising profits works.

You put so much oil in this the US wants to invade the fucking plate! - Gordon Ramsay.

The Miz and Seth Rollins are trying to establish that point of view right now, to make the Intercontinental championship relevant again.

About Heavyweights being World champion only, it wouldn't work if the godly wrestlers weren't given a chance because we the fans wouldn't accept big guys like Braun/Big Show/Kane/HHH/Roman or whoever was above 240lbs trading the main title around who are not as efficient in terms of workrate.

Size to me never really mattered by the time Bret and Shawn won their first WWE championship and realistically besides not being big draws they didn't dissapoint in terms of credibility.

Not that's ONLY reason. Bret asked for it to main event and Davey Boy to be added because it was in London.

Even though I like the term "heavyweight" to be included in a world title name it's not necessary these days. There was a time when the world was fixated only on the Heavyweight divisions of boxing and it made sense to call the wrestling champion the Heavyweight champion. It held more prestige than the middleweight, lightweight, etc. That's not the case anymore, in fact the heavyweight divisions are the most lacking in talent these days.

I think it’s the main thing that separates them from MMA and boxing. In those arenas they can’t have any big man vs little man contests. It gives matches great contrasts of styles with the right people involved. If someone is a good worker and has a good connection with the crowd (heel or face) then they should be fighting for the bigger prizes.

By your logic OP we would never have seen Shawn vs Taker or AJ Styles vs Lesnar, and both of these combos have produced great matches.

The people in the main event scene should be the people that the crowd are most invested in. This would mean we would have more WrestleMania main events like 30 as less like 34. And by that I mean the atmosphere in the arena, rather than specifically the performers in that match

Re: WWE has it all backwards...and they have since 1992

Wow, what an absolutely woeful thread OP.

The heavyweight title is for (kayfabe) the best wrestler, so the one who can beat everybody else. To say that you can't have lighter guys hold the title really dilutes the value of it because you can end up with terrible folks holding the main belt (like we have now with Roman) while better suited stars struggle underneath (although there's no clear answer as to who should be WWE champion right now.)

There was once a guy called Cassius Clay who was a light-heavyweight in boxing but his skill level and sheer charisma drove him to the heavyweight ranks where he became world champion, only ever losing the belt when he was stripped of it. You may know him as Muhammad Ali, widely considered to be the greatest boxer of all-time (sure there's an argument to be had but he's certainly in the conversation.) Now to go to your logic, the boxing commission should have never allowed him the opportunity to move up a weight class which is really dumb.

The cream rises to the top and in the WWE, the top is the heavyweight title.

PS,
Just so you know, the Intercontinental title is a heavyweight title too.

Treating smaller workers with the "respect they deserve" ie limiting their career advancement because they arn't big enough.
