I agree in relation to heirarchy and titles BUT the booking has not helped this company become anywhere near the global brand the WWE is, so whatever teh WWE is doing, its doing better than NJPW.
Its called Brand Value.
The WWE are able to enjoy a ridiculously large level of success because of a number of factors
1. They were so mainstream in the 80s & 90s meaning they were able to grow pretty quickly to all their major markets.
2. Many fans (like myself) pretty much still follow the company out of habit more than anything else. After 20 years it takes a lot to just stop something that has given you so much joy over the years.
3 The fact that Wrestlemania is such a machine that it effectively pays for itself
4. Points 1, 2 & 3 have meant that they are pretty much the entry level wrestling brands for new fans.
The WWE isn't really doing anything better than NJPW right now. They literally are living off their brand name but that brand name is truly invaluable to the company. Without it they are nothing.
NJPW isn't perfect though. I do feel they overdo it with the tag team matches (I saw enough Taguchi Japan v LIJ matches in the last 6 months to last me a life time) and there is only so much they can book Okada like Superman until the fans really get sick of it. At 29 can they really keep this booking up for another 10 years? He's younger than pretty much all the guys who are considered next in line (in particular Naito & Omega).
But once again i truly agree with pretty much everything you've said Seabs. I like the fact that not everyone can be "the man", that is one thing that has kinda annoyed me while viewing the WWE boards at times. Being a solid midcarder/uppermid card guy is viewed as as a failure by many. Thats effectively a Big Show style career which i'm sure many wrestlers would KILL for. Not everyone can be an Austin, Cena,Rock, Punk, Taker etc... people need to stop expecting that they can.
One thing i also loved during Naito's IC reign was just how disgusted everyone was with how he treated the belt. All we get in the WWE is a promo about how "you're a coward of a champion and have no honor." Naito legit SHOWED no honor and everyone from his fellow competitors to the veterans to the young lions to commentators all responded to it. No one needed to say he was showing the belt no honor, he let his character do the talking and everyone played it back.
Agreed with the Jr Heavyweights too. I sometimes forget that these guys are effectively cruiserweights. Hiromu could go up against Okada and not look out of place but try and put anyone bar Neville in the ring with a Reigns or a Rollins right now and they simply won't look legit.
The only point i'm 50/50 on with you is the filler before the main event point. On one side i do feel it helps depending on the show but again I find it hard to disagree with you fully because WK11 had Kushida/Hiromu, Shibata/Goto, Tanahasi/Naito & Omega/Okada go back to back and accounted for about 2 -
2 1/2 hours worth of the show and it absolutely flew.
