Halftime Heat

With Superbowl happening tomorrow, something that I'm wondering about what WWE did in superbowl in the past....

During the halftime heat show, what exactly happened to WWE during that time? By that, I mean like did all the people involved in the show, have to just sit around backstage and stuff, and watch Superbowl and then just wait until almost halftime. And the second it was halftime at the superbowl, WWE began the halftime heat broadcast?

And how exactly did Halftime Heat get so many viewers, when the superbowl also posted such huge ratings. Were there really not that many USA WWE fans at the time who were also Superbowl fans?

Re: Halftime Heat

The only halftime heat I remember was the empty arena match with rock and mankind. So not a lot of set up or anything there and not a lot of people waiting around. I dont know about the others, if there were any (I cant remember).

But that one got a lot viewers because WWF was actually caterig to the main audience (males) eith the hardcore match and people were really big on the feud, especiallu mankind finally being a champion.

Re: Halftime Heat

That was a surprisingly good match, at least better than I thought an empty arena match could be. Job well done by both Rock and Foley.

Re: Halftime Heat

If you mean how they booked the time slot to fit exactly in the Halftime, the Rock/Mankind Empty Arena Match was taped beforehand and during the regular Heat episode they just showed RAW segments from Monday. They hyped the match big as an innovative concept while also promoting throughout Heat with parking lot segments of Rock and Foley arriving at the building. As for the audience, the nature of the match was all but typical wrestling, in the sense that it was like watching a completely random scene with all the locations and especially Rock's tremendous verbal performance made it one of the most entertaining matches the business has ever seen. It was two big guys brawling all over a huge 20k arena, using everything they find to hit each other and entertaining physically and verbally. Peak level entertainment. Around that time WWF were putting on the best TV product of all time, this period is probably my favorite in the history of the industry.

During the SuperBowl there are a lot of casual viewers watching TV, the idea behind the Empty Arena concept was to hook them and it more than did its job. They were smart to realize that a regular wrestling match wasn't going to attract the mass audience who was switching channels that night and it was a brilliant concept that was executed to perfection. Drew a 6.6 rating, biggest ever on Heat and at that time the widest viewed WWF match in cable history. You can basically write a book with all the awesome Rock one-liners during it. One I will always remember is the Jack Daniels spot, where Rock takes a shot of whiskey on live TV and Vince trying to cover it on commentary

Re: Halftime Heat

A 6.6 on a Super Bowl Sunday. WWE and the PG fans try very often to defend the miserable ratings for the current shows by searching for excuses blaming other popular shows, time slots or various holidays and in the Attitude Era WWE did a 6.6. on a Super Bowl Sunday. Nuff said

Not to mention going up against WCW every week.

Rock316AE, was that 6.6 the quarter rating for the Empty arena match? (I know the full show did a 5.0)

Re: Halftime Heat

Match was pre-taped and edited to fit halftime during Superbowl 33 which was one the worst Superbowls of the last 20 years

Re: Halftime Heat

But the TNA house show comment made by Foley when he and the Rock remembered the match was one of the funniest things I ever heard
