The Higher Power and Who ran over Stone Cold

Two of the hottest, most memorable and biggest storylines in the Attitude Era... and both had underwhelming conclusions. The Higher Power turned out to be Vince McMahon all along and the guy who ran over Stone Cold turned out to be fan favourite Rikishi who was basically a comedy character in a mid-card tag team with Scotty 2 Hotty called Too Cool.

For those of you who were watching at the time: who did you guys expect to be the Higher Power and the person who ran over Stone Cold? What were the rumours at the time? Were the revelations a shock or not really? Apparently, a lot of people expected Jake the Snake Roberts to be the Higher Power?

Re: The Higher Power and Who ran over Stone Cold

I remember being disappointed that it was Vince. It all seemed very rushed, like Vince regretted doing it and wanted to get it over with quick. Of course I was 12 then and didn't think about why I was disappointed, and the holy shit Stone Cold is CEO now! a minute later helped. Austin vs McMahon was so hot to me that I got over it as soon as Linda and Stef o Miss Mac ambushed Vince and Shane

Tbh WWE were very smart in shifting the focus back to Austin vs. McMahon and giving that feud a conclusion. And ofc CEO Austin was pretty awesome.

Come to think of it, the storyline made ZERO sense and completely fell apart with Vince turning out to be the Higher Power at the end. It made the story PRETTY inconsistent.

Higher Power I never gave much thought to but I can remember thinking Billy Gunn would be the guy to run over Stone Cold.

Re: The Higher Power and Who ran over Stone Cold

I think the Higher Power angle, despite all the illogical twists and turns was carried just by the sheer energy of the Austin/McMahon feud. And yeah, CEO Austin was the highlight for sure and was also one of the biggest ratings jumps of that year. I think they wanted to give the Austin/McMahon angle one last go before Austin cut back on his schedule since it was originally supposed to end at Wrestlemania 15 as advertised.

The "Who Ran Over Stone Cold" angle was massively disappointing however, and I think the Rikishi reveal ended up cooling off Austin for some time since the fans weren't buying it. You had Triple H denying he was involved so often that by the time they revealed him to be behind it, the fans were like "Yeah, we kinda already knew that..." It was a mess, they just wanted to shoehorn a twist into the whole thing because they could. I would have rather had Jericho or even Angle be the ones to have done it.

Such a memorable line! At that time I was too young to care about the storyline but I'll never forget that moment.

When it came to the hire power I had no idea who could have been the Higher Power because I just got into wrestling that year. I wasn't disappointed at the time since it played into Stephanie McMahon's heel turn a year later.

When it came to the Austin angle I knew it was HHH, I don't even know why they tried to swerve us. It's funny because Rikishi was one of HHH's first opponents after he beat Show for the WWF Title on Raw, they actually did a good job building him up as a legitment threat even though he was only a mid-carder. HHH had to get DQed just to keep the title.

I thought it was obvious Vince was the higher power. A higher power than Taker/ Shane is tough to come by. It's not going to be Roberts or some nobody like the Jackyl.

Did not see Rikishi coming but how could you? It made no sense other than he's Rock's cousin which was never mentioned before.

I remember hearing at the time(I don't know how I did because I was 13) that it was going to be Jake Roberts.

It made sense in a way because Jake had a history with the Undertaker and he had played the role of a sick, sadistic, and manipulative character. I could've easily seen them portray Jake as some type of a Charles Manson-like figure who sent his minions to do his bidding. It could've worked

I never cared much for the "Who Ran Over Austin" storyline. I understand why they tried it, but I just never found it compelling enough to give a damn who it was
