How can the Attitude Era be overrated?

Lately I've seen a lot of criticism towards AE (mainly from new fans) and quite frankly I don't get it. The crowd was hot every week. Fans reacted to everything and it was never boring. How can a product that entertained fans be overrated? Isn't the point to give fans what they want? Attitude Era did just that. Some fans are saying this era is superior but objectively how is it better if fans are bored out of their minds and not reacting? They cheer a bit for favorites like Seth and Becky but quickly die down. Obviously fans are not entertained if they are not cheering throughout the show.

Critically, a lot of it doesn't hold up, especially the WWF's mid-card and most of the WCW main event past 1997. The crowds were hot, and that helps, but if you're paying attention to things that make sense or are truly gripping, there's a lot of silly and '99 WWF is pretty terrible from a making sense point of view.

I don't think it's overrated, more people see it through rose tinted spectacles.

Raw and SD episodes had a hook, that wanted you to watch to the end to see what was gonna happen. But the matches in between the angles were pretty much dogshit. You could barely go an episode without at least 3 matches ending in a DQ. On the plus side though, they kept the bigger matches for PPV's so people would actually watch them. And as Wood says, a LOT of it doesn't hold up very well.

I don't agree with the never being boring thing either. I'm currently going through the whole era myself and have to take breaks, because it's very draining. Watching the Gang Warz, had me ripping my hair out more than being entertained. If I ever see a Harris Bros, Savio Vega or Kurrgan match again it'll be way too soon.

Does all that really matter? This era has workrate and less trainwreck storylines but ratings are at an all time low and crowd is falling asleep. So whatever AE did back then worked and apparently fans didn't care/think it was silly or nonsense.

The world where the AE "worked" no longer exists. people knew it was mostly nonsense back then. They just wanted to see Austin kick VInce's ass, some women getting their tits out and someone getting hit with weapons. If they did that now what they did then, they'd be off air faster than you can say Pat Patterson is a jigglypuff.

I'll echo that people see that shit through rose tinted glasses. I was around during the attitude era and when I look at it now alot of it was just terrible trash. Ratings don't speak for quality. Look at Jersey Shore.

Re: How can the Attitude Era be overrated?

The style of booking in the Attitude Era was a necessity to keep fans from changing the channel. While a lot of the Attitude Era is not critically acclaimed, most fans back then were not critics to the degree that many fans are today.

Re: How can the Attitude Era be overrated?

The attitude era is a product of a bygone era in which 'crash tv' was popular and what was deemed acceptable is vastly different than today. WWE eventually jumped the shark and were being edgy for the sake of being edgy. As a result the attitude era has aged poorly when you look take off the rose tinted glasses.

Re: How can the Attitude Era be overrated?

It was a product of its time but it was so much better than today's WWE and made huge stars and storylines that got us hooked.

Because people talk about it like is never had any flaws and everything on the show is perfect. And constantly suck it off. As great as it was, some people do overrate it. Also maybe because people are sick of people who constantly fucking talk about it. I agree with Cody Rhodes that it is time to move the fuck on. My main problem with tna for example is they constantly seem obsessed with ecw. It died get over it.

IT FUCKING HAPPENED
