Technicalities. The second title reign was won in Halloween Havoc vs Sting with the match being announced as a non-title match. Goldberg won and celebrated with the title. The following night the title defense was found to be unsanctioned meaning the reign was null and void and the title was vacated.

Ah, ok. Apparently his second title win was rendered null

"The following night on Nitro, Sting declared that he never agreed to defend the title and called James J. Dillon to the ring to explain. Dillon then announced the title was being vacated due to Sting's attack on referee Charles Robinson during the unsanctioned match and announced a tournament for the vacant title to conclude at the following month's Mayhem pay-per-view event."

Cagematch lists it as Goldberg holding the title for one night before it was vacated.

You nailed it. That title change never counted, but I guess Cagematch didn't get the memo.

At best, he should've had two. Certainly not more than that, for obvious reasons.

He lost his belt in controversial fashion, so he should've got it back. But, Hogan hoganed, he went to film a movie & came back to a fairly different set up and got injured a few months later. There was a period of a year where he was gone for about 8 months and each time he came back, he returned to a considerably worse situation that made it impossible to follow up on what he did last.

That company was fucked, anyway. Was going to take a lot more than Goldberg as champion to save them.

Well, back in the day it wasn't the number of times you won the belt in a short space of time that mattered. Goldberg having one reign wouldn't have mattered if he had won the belt and kept it through 1998 and maybe even 1999. There was no one that was really presenting themselves to beat Goldberg when he lost, so it's more the fact that Goldberg only got so many months as champion that is the egregious crime here.

You need to put it in to perspective. He debuted in 97, won the US title in 98, won the world title in 98, won the tag titles with Bret in 99. Had 6 months off due to injury at a time he was meant to win his official 2nd World title. He was scheduled to beat Steiner in 01 as well.

So if not for WCW closing and a freak accident, he would have been a 3x world champion within 3 years.

Then there's the politics that went against him, both Hogan and Nash wanting the rub off him, Hogan refusing to drop the belt to him on PPV, Hogan refusing to let Goldberg main event when world champion.etc

I'm not sure it even bothered Goldberg. Based on everything he's said over his career, he just cared about being a hero to kids, which he was. He didn't need many title reigns for that, though I would have liked if he did have more. At least as much as Booker did.

Re: Goldberg only had 1 world title run in WCW?..REALLY

He didn't need another 1

his push was just about perfect, then in 1999 they had no clue on what to do with him

until he was forced to beat his own streak or be fired, kept him busy while wcw built someone else up to replace him

should have been DDP
