What If - Lex Luger received Roman's sustained push?

This is a fairly simple what-if timeline. In this scenario, the WWF still allows Luger to only beat Yokozuna by countout at SummerSlam, with the same scenario being played out that they will wait until WrestleMania to crown him. However the difference is that the World Wrestling Federation decides to ignore fan sentiment for Bret Hart and gives Luger the belt at WMX (in a victory over Hart). In this scenario the WWF is determined to make Lex the next Hulk Hogan and the firm face of the company, no matter what. Just as they are now with Roman Reigns.

Following this, Luger holds the belt for over a year, main eventing WrestleMania XI against a heel Bret Hart before losing to Shawn Michaels at the 1995 Survivor Series. He then wins the 1996 Royal Rumble and regains the title at WrestleMania XII. Despite fan apathy and a host of more popular options (Shawn Michaels, Steve Austin, Undertaker, Sid), Luger remains face. He retains the belt until the 1996 Survivor Series, when Undertaker turns heel to beat him in a controversial decision. Luger wins the 1997 Royal Rumble by eliminating Steve Austin, then defeats Undertaker at the main event of WrestleMania 13.

What are the ramifications of Lex Luger receiving a three year sustained push as a patriotic babyface, three WrestleMania main events, and three title reigns?

Lex luger receiving a multi year push results in about the same end as what we have ended up with roman after these years.

Fans weren't whiny geeks back then. They push him, the crowd goes mild, business drops but it was dropping anyways since the product was terrible back then too.

Come 97 it's a bit different as NWO changed the game and fans starting pushing for heels or edgy faces. At that point you'd start to see backlash.

Business was really bad, so Vince couldn't really afford to keep pushing a guy who wasn't over enough. Roman is lucky to have been pushed post-AE when business is so much better than it was in the early 90's.

I only took this to 1997. The interesting thing would be if the WWF decided to de-emphasize Austin, or have Luger defeat Steve Austin at WrestleMania 14. Imagine the WWF refusing to alter course at all - Luger is still "Made in the USA" and is being promoted as a babyface, while much of the company and fan base around him changes into the Attitude Era.

He'd have been as big as you possibly could have been during a down period in the business from 93-95. Come late 95-96 fans might start to turn on him to an extent but it would be nothing like what you see with Reigns today.

Well you can't have an Attitude Era with a smiling goof at top. It would just be the new gen with Luger on top and WCW would bankrupt them in the process since fans wanted edge.

If Vince had competition he would of pulled the plug on face Roman long ago. He doesn't so all people can do is cry about it while handing him their $. Vince laughs.

Nash/Hall still would have left in 1996. Hogan turns heel and forms the NWO with Nash/Hall. WWE dumps the New Generation direction for Attitude and the timeline is restored.

Re: What If - Lex Luger received Roman's sustained push?

If they did this then WWF dies I reckon. You have to think of the ramifications of continuing with Luger on top until 97: Bret doesn't become the top guy, probably takes the offer from WCW and not a 20 year deal with WWF - NO MONTREAL SCREWJOB. Shawn doesn't become the champ, it's likely being the politician he is that he leaves with Hall and Nash and also joins WCW and maybe you get the Shawn/Bret feud there. There's a lot more than this too, you just have to think how much would have to change from history with Luger as champ for 3 years. I just can't see any way that events unfold the way they did at all with Luger on top. We get no Attitude Era and WCW is probably the victor. Considering how bad WCW was run money-wise they could easily have gone bust regardless and then you end up with no WWE OR WCW. Maybe wrestling itself doesn't survive as a viable entertainment industry.

Bankruptcy is the hyperbolic answer, but depending on how hard and how long they continued the push it may not be outside the realm of possibility.
