The following is the fantasy booking of an ECW January 2002 PPV. What if WWE had ONLY purchased WCW and NOT also purchased ECW in 2001? What if someone else (who had as deep of pockets as Ted Turner, i.e. Rupert Murdoch or Donald Trump) had purchased ECW, re-branded it a bit (keeping as much of old ECW as possible yet expanding it to appeal to a more diverse audience) and kept it alive as WWE’s main competition. All it would have taken was an owner that would be willing to shell out the bucks (like Ted Turner did for Bischoff) & obtain a TV deal (Both of the previously mentioned billionaires could have accomplished that) ; and an actual businessman/manager who who could do a better job than Bischoff. Ideally this person would have been the final decision guy, yet someone who could have gotten the most out of creative minds like Paul Heyman, Dusty Rhodes, Jeff Jarrett, Kevin Sullivan, etc. Surely there was someone who could have done this in the wrestling world). I mean Bischoff consistently beat Vince for quite a long time and Bischoff was horrible! And I think fans would have pounced on this! I mean ECW even at it’s best could not have gone head to head with Raw or Nitro on Monday night, but if they would have had a live show back in the late 90s on a different night of the week, heck even opposite Thunder, fans would have been all over that. And even fans who didn’t watch ECW that much at least knew it was the #3 company and they knew it offered a different product than the other two. In the absence of WCW it could have made major strides to compete with WWE simply because we as fans had gotten accustomed to 2 competing products that were both good yet completely different. And to answer the imminent question about Paul Heyman, I would have given him the option to just stay home and collect a check, OR if he wanted to be involved creatively, he could do so as part of a team but would be required to have an on-air role. I would have let him choose between color-commentary and managing. The following scenario is him as a manager. If he would have chosen color-commentary I would have just interchanged him with Bobby Heenan and the faction known as The Dangerous Alliance would have become The Heenan Family. If this would have happened in 2001, this would have been my very first PPV of 2002 to kickoff the re-birth of ECW. My version of an ECW re-birth would have looked like 50% the best of old ECW’s product and 50% the best of WCW’s product. It would be a 2-night kickoff PPV; Saturday AND Sunday each having a 1-hour pre-show. So most of the matches would be those two nights with a few airing a few days later on the weekly programming. Let me know what you guys think, not just about the concept but also about the card, the factions, ALL THOSE MANAGERS AND VALETS!!! And I know it’s a huge card but....pick me some winners!!!

Re: What if ECW has survived in 2001?

Not reading all of that but they'd have been bankrupt by 2002 and Heyman would be swimming with the fishies.

Re: What if ECW has survived in 2001?

I was born in '95 and, living in the South, we watched a bunch of WCW and then WWF/E, never any ECW. So I don't know many of the names here, but it looks like it would be a stacked card! Are you looking for us to pick who we think would win? Or are you going to type out the show?

Re: What if ECW has survived in 2001?

if ecw had survived ROH and FIP wouldn't exist

If wwe only purchased wcw there would be no guarantee for ecw because of the FCC and PTC lawsuits from the turn of the millennium and the bad rep around promotions not named WWE

trust me, the climate of tv doomed mainstream wrestling long before the acquisition of WCW even happened

Despite what you may have heard about so-called "smark marks" and the "IWC" some of us are actually here to help. All you have to do is ask.

I just imagine if Heyman could have stolen Brock from WWE and made him the face of ECW.
