Re: Back-To-School Essentials PSA By Sandy Hook Promise

I understand what they were going for with bringing issue to a dangerous problem that has definitely been seen within our schools, and I don't mean to be insensitive or something...

But this really feels like a ton fear mongering to me. If kids see this it's almost point blank saying you should expect to encounter a school shooter and that going to school could be a life or death situation. The commercial itself doesn't really present anything other than reminding everybody about school shootings, which the vast majority of people already are aware of and that many people are fighting against to have laws changed.

But yeah, all I got out of this was "this seems in real bad taste." I don't think that was the intention.

My hospital has fire drills, you know how many fires we've had in the hospital in 45 years that have required it?

Zero.

So its not saying you should expect it at all. Not even close.

It's miserable, man. Conducting a "shelter-in-place/active shooter" drill with a classroom of Kindergarteners was one of the sadder aspects of my teaching career.

Very sad, but necessary considering the frequency of these incidents. Makes me very thankful the kids in my family don't have to see stuff like this and face very little threat of a school shooting. Stuff like this should not need to be as necessary as it evidently has become out there. It's really very sad, protecting children should be the most no-brainer decision any nation has to make.

While it is a problem, the amount of actual school shootings are greatly exaggerated . An overwhelming majority of school shootings are in fact, suicides.

I had a hard time explaining the purpose of the drill was. I remember one kid asking me "why would someone want to hurt us?" it broke my heart hearing that.

I joke around on here like 95% of the time but that's one of the saddest things I have read in a while.

While it is a problem??? Greatly exaggerated? What's your point?

FFS man, the victims of this shit were 6 year olds. Fucking innocent 6 year olds. I have a 3 year old toddler and you better believe if he became a victim of something like this i'm not writing that off as 'a problem'.

GTFO out of here downplaying anything like this. Attitudes like this are part of the problem.

And yes of course student suicides should not be dismissed or downplayed either.

"You know I'm automatically attracted to beautiful — I just start kissing them. It's like a magnet. Just kiss. I don't even wait."

"I backed him. You can see how loyal he is. He was begging for my endorsement. I could have said, 'Mitt, drop to your knees.' He would have dropped to his knees."

"You oughta see this guy - 'uh, I don't know what I said, uh, I don't remember,'"

“I will build a great wall – and nobody builds walls better than me, believe me – and I’ll build them very inexpensively. I will build a great, great wall on our southern border, and I will make Mexico pay for that wall. Mark my words.”

"He is a war hero because he was captured. I like people who weren't captured."
