UK Conservative Leadership Race: Who Will Be the UK's Next Prime Minister?

Tory leadership contest: 10 rivals face first ballot of MPs

Quote:
Tory MPs have voted in the first round of the contest to select a new party leader and the next prime minister.

A secret ballot was held in the House of Commons, with a result expected some time after 13:00 BST.

Outgoing leader Theresa May refused to say which of the 10 contenders she had voted for, telling reporters: "That's none of your business."

Any candidate who fails to secure at least 17 MPs' votes will be eliminated from the contest.

Further ballots will be held next week, with the two most popular MPs moving to a run-off of Tory party members.

The winner of the contest to succeed Mrs May is expected to be announced in the week of 22 July.

Esther McVey was the first candidate to cast her vote and Boris Johnson the last.

Mr Johnson - who launched his leadership campaign on Wednesday - is regarded as the frontrunner in the contest, with many more public endorsements from MPs than any of his rivals.

In his pitch to MPs, the former foreign secretary pledged to take the UK out of the EU by the end of October. He gave little detail of his plan but stressed it was not his aim to leave without a deal.

He also defended what he called his straight-talking style, saying the public wanted to hear what politicians genuinely thought. But he dodged questions on whether he had ever taken cocaine.

One rival, Home Secretary Sajid Javid, described Mr Johnson as "yesterday's news".

"We need tomorrow's leader, today," he said. "Not the same old insiders with the same old school ties - but a new generation, with a new agenda."

Mr Javid told BBC Radio 4's Today programme he wanted to leave the EU with a deal, but would choose no deal over no Brexit.

He said there needed to be changes to the controversial Irish backstop - designed to avoid a hard border on the island of Ireland - of either a time limit "or some proper exit clause", and UK government should offer to pay for any "alternative arrangements" for the border.

Mr Javid, Environment Secretary Michael Gove, former Brexit Secretary Dominic Raab and Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt have all received enough public endorsements to suggest they will make it through to the next round.

The remaining five candidates - Matt Hancock, Rory Stewart, Andrea Leadsom, Mark Harper and Ms McVey - are hoping to make it through and to build momentum.

Re: UK Conservative Leadership Race: Who Will Be the UK's Next Prime Minister?

Sajid is who I'll vote for.

He seems a true Conservative - genuine in his desire to build solid foundations for people to take control of their own destiny. He has that passion for social justice which is clear (his background helps solidify this opinion), and is highly intelligent in an economic sense.

Probably will be Boris, but I think Conservatism as an ideology has lost its way (the right of the vocal far left and their horse shit narrative has damaged it too) - so guys like Sajid, even Raab can help restore the key principles IMO. Tories need to remind the nation that they don't want to control our lives the way Socialism would, they want to give us a platform for people to succeed, if they work for it.

Well this is the Tories we're talking about. So naturally they will select the absolute worst person for the job because that's all they ever do. Every decision they make is always the worst possible decision.

So I'm fully expecting Boris Johnson.

Tory leadership contest: Boris Johnson tops first ballot

Quote:
Boris Johnson has secured the highest number of votes in the first ballot to select the Conservative party leader and next prime minister.

Three contenders - Mark Harper, Andrea Leadsom and Esther McVey - have been knocked out, in the secret ballot held in the House of Commons.

Mr Johnson received 114 votes, Jeremy Hunt was second with 43, and Michael Gove third with 37 votes.

Seven candidates progress to the next round of voting next week.

The two most popular MPs will be put to Tory party members in a final vote later this month.

The winner of the contest to succeed Theresa May is expected to be announced in the week of 22 July.
Well Boris is off to a good start, I fully expect McVey, Leadsom and their supporters to now back Boris, could also possibly go to Gove but he's probably lost some of the brexit vote after going for the more moderate approach to brexit.

I'm fairly certain it'll be Johnson. But he did really make an ass of himself with his Brexit comments, though. But hey, it's a country that chooses the Brexit for themselves and slowly realizes they don't want that and now throw a tantrum...

I'm a Baron Corbin mark and I don't care what you think about that

So did you just vote to leave on WTO terms? If so what is the potential consequence of that? How do you manage the Irish border issue?

You people seem to have this idea that this was going to be a piece of cake. 40years of legislation and economic ties dealt with in a two year period. Either you are 1) very na´ve 2) completely ignorant. Don't listen to all the spin and bullshit spouted by Rees Mogg and Co who will benefit from an economic downturn. Hell, the bloke moved his assets to Ireland! I'd also stop reading the Daily Mail...son.

Son I don't read gossip rags. I listen to both sides left and right and made up my own mind like many many people did.

You are the one taring all leave voters with the neanderthal brush.

As I said the Government, right and left didn't want to leave the EU. So of course they aren't going to take negotiations seriously. Anyone with half a brain could see that.

The key issue was immigration and/or free movement. The government wanted this the people didn't. Ask any voter and this was the issue, controlling OUR borders.

The issue with Ireland border? Well, I would give them a choice like Scotland had and like the Falklands had. In or out.

Who will be he UK's next Prime Minister?

Well it's being decided entirely by Tory MPs an Tory members so my money is on: an absolutely fucking shameful cunt that'll make me even more embarrassed of being from this stupid fucking country than I already am.

Honestly if I wasn't so scared of heights I'd have jumped off a fucking bridge by now.

Boris is the only choice..

None of these fucks will make anything better, (and Boris is probably the least sensible out of all of them) but at least with BOJO at the helm there will be lolz n shit.
