Agreed with this. I'm my community, it's sort of a status symbol if you are a college graduate. Most of my family has bachelor degrees, so it was seen as though I should get one as well and I did.

Now that I'm older, I wished that I had been an electrician instead. They make very good money, plus I love working with my hands and figuring out problems. However, trades were not spoken of much where I grew up. The whole push was for everyone to get a "4 year degree". The tides seem to be turning in that respect in some parts of the US.

In Tennessee, a new high school graduate can go to Community College free, for 2 years. I think there's even a program for those who are not new graduates, but never attended college, to go for free also. It's a great plan to get an Associates Degree for basically free.
In South Carolina I believe if you apply for lottery tuition assistance and attend a 2 year program, I believe it helps pay for about 1/2 of the tuition or so. Even if I am mistaken you can get two years of school at a much cheaper rate and then transfer to a 4 year program and save tens of thousands of dollars. If you take the right classes those two years pretty much everything will transfer. I did not take the right classes so only about 3/4 of my classes transferred. I was not originally planning to go to a 4 year college, so that kind of bit me in the ass. Going this route instead of the full 4 year route easily saved me about 40 thousand bucks.

Hell no. I don't want to pay for your or someone else's university or healthcare. I work hard from sunrise to sunset and have enough trouble without helping this nanny state, but as it says according to the true proverb:

Re: America needs free healthcare and college

Paying taxes to cover someone getting a degree that makes them overqualified to work at McDonalds and then paying taxes to subsidize them because they can't get a job? Count me out. I'm on board with making college more affordable, but I'm not on board with paying double taxes for a piece of paper.

As for healthcare, a public option buy into Medicare is the way to go in my opinion. Those who make less than 200% of the poverty level (~$2,200 a month) can buy into Medicare at a sliding scale rate. Those who can't or won't get insurance can have up to 1% of their paycheck deducted to cover their medical bills until they are paid off so they won't go bankrupt and without hurting their credit.

You do realise that your insurance goes in to a big pot that other people use right? So its basically a tax that pays for other peoples healthcare, including fat slobs. So whether you like it or not, thats what you're doing, pal.

I know that, but paying for other people would pile on top of that.

Re: America needs free healthcare and college

No thanks the reason the cost of both have increased at a rate exponentially higher than that of inflation is because of government guaranteeing the cost will be paid no matter what that cost is

The US needs to go back to the dystopian 1990s when the government was much less involved in both and the price of both was consequently much lower

People aren't going to pay another 6-7 trillion a year in taxes because socialists are upset. They aren't going to accept increasing the federal budget that much by any means. No middle class voter is going to push the button for a candidate that promises them free shit in return for confiscatory tax rates on the middle class, which is the only possible way to pay amounts of this magnitude

Re: America needs free healthcare and college

Well yes I would agree with tax payer health care for all, it just makes sense for a society to keep it's citizens as healthy as possibly, economically if nothing else. Every other 1st world nation has it and it works a hell of a lot better than the US.

For education, the $$$ it takes for tuition sounds insane:

https://www.theatlantic.com/educatio...merica/569884/

Quote:
All told, including the contributions of individual families and the government (in the form of student loans, grants, and other assistance), Americans spend about $30,000 per student a year—nearly twice as much as the average developed country. “The U.S. is in a class of its own,” says Andreas Schleicher, the director for education and skills at the OECD, and he does not mean this as a compliment. “Spending per student is exorbitant, and it has virtually no relationship to the value that students could possibly get in exchange.”
There's reform needed there if degrees cost 10s of thousands of dollars, it simply needs for subsidising.

As for the whole 'My tax dollars blah blah blah' that old chestnut is always brought up when it comes to these particular topics. But honestly get a list of everything your money goes to and if you want to die on that hill, check out costs of upgrading the military industrial complex that isn't needed, useless government studies, tax assistance for big corp etc etc. But you never hear the hot button term 'tax dollars: Oh No!' when it comes to those things because they aren't political footballs.

"You know I'm automatically attracted to beautiful — I just start kissing them. It's like a magnet. Just kiss. I don't even wait."

"I backed him. You can see how loyal he is. He was begging for my endorsement. I could have said, 'Mitt, drop to your knees.' He would have dropped to his knees."

"You oughta see this guy - 'uh, I don't know what I said, uh, I don't remember,'"

“I will build a great wall – and nobody builds walls better than me, believe me – and I’ll build them very inexpensively. I will build a great, great wall on our southern border, and I will make Mexico pay for that wall. Mark my words.”
