Re: 'Iraq is dying': oil flows freely but corruption fuels growing anger
"Democracy" is no guarantor of peace, prosperity, happiness or national unity. Oftentimes, it is simply a convenient smokescreen by which plutocrats can carve up the land between themselves. But frankly, that occurs with dictators in power. It eventually occurs after violent populist revolutions. It pretty much occurs in every system of government known to man.
The best any nation can hope for is a tolerable status quo, in which the rights of the individual are respected. Ultimately, though, that depends on what leader you get. America's democratic experiment succeeded because they had men prudent enough to create systems of checks and balances. But sadly this is not the norm, and even if Iraq found their Washington, corruption will always find ways to seep in, as it has in every major Western democracy.
