Re: What is 1 unpopular opinion you have on education?
Im a teacher as well and can write a 10,000 word essay on whats wrong but ill see if I can shorten it...
- most classes taught, the info will never be used in real world places. I teach Geography and while I think learning where places are is important, and how to read maps, kids cant get passed that they can just use the GPS on their phone. Outside of some people who become writers and need English/Writing classes or Engineers/Accountants/Coders nobody needs math much past Algebra 1.
- some kids need to be put on a vocational track in middle school. I have kids that are so far behind and will never graduate with a regular high school diploma. These kids are going to fall way behind in the work force and come out with ZERO skills. They should be in vocational classes not Algebra or World Lit classes. They need to be learning how to work construction, electrician, work on cars, paint, something that can make them vital to society and possess a skill or skills that are required in the real world.
- parents need to be more involved. A huge chunk of parents who care and are involved in their child's education, will see their child graduate high school. And a percentage of those will go to college and graduate but they will find a way to be successful. I have around 105 students over 5 classes. I have students whose parents are drug addicts and they live with a grandparent who cant control them. I have students whose parents are in and out of jail and so are the students. It kills me when you see what parents put kids thru and realize some kids have no chance and will be iifelong criminals. I have several former students serving years in state prisons. Read an article today about a former student who just got busted for armed robbery.
Theres a ton wrong. Get rid of No Child Left Behind if any of its practices are still in. Get rid of common core. Hold kids responsible for their grades and parents responsible for attendance.
