Why is NJPW So Upset At AEW?

I understand that Kenny Omega and THE ELITE left, but I don't understand why that is something to get so worked up over?

Kenny Omega was with NJPW for a long time, completed all of his contractual obligations, and performed to the best of his abilities. His contract expired, and he opted to leave, that is life, a better option came to the table, and he went with that. It's not like NJPW was completely blindsided by the departure, they know when contracts are ending.

I understand that Kenny said that he would expand NJPW to the west, and to an extent, he definitely did, but his life priorities had changed, and it was time to move on, is that so difficult to understand?

In the case of The Young Bucks, it's even more of a headscratcher, since it's not like the tag division was an integral component to NJPW, and again, they fulfilled their obligations.

Cody was a freelancer and he was never going to be steady.

I'm just finding it hard to understand why NJPW is so upset with all of them leaving, they all gave everything to NJPW while they were there, and performed at an incredibly high level, that's all you can really ask for.

Am I missing something, is there more to the story that I don't understand?

The thought of a working relationship between the two is salivating, but based on the word going around, it seems highly unlikely for the foreseeable future.

I doubt they're upset with them. I'd say they are more than likely staying loyal to their working agreement with roh. That's just me guessing though

I wasn't aware they are upset with AEW at all?

Like above poster says they are just staying loyal to their agreement with ROH (for now)

That was the word that was going around. Pretty sure Meltzer added to that, and that whole thing with the press conference where they wouldn't even mention Kenny Omega added fuel to the fire.

I think they were counting more on Kenny, and to an extent the Bucks, to drive their North American expansion for the long term. They saw a better opportunity with Tony, Cody and AEW, so now they’re basically in direct competition with NJPW’s expansion plans, to the point that they’ve almost completely ground to a halt. That’s a pretty significant hit to NJPW, so I can see why AEW might not be on their Christmas card list.

Send lawyers, guns and money.

Kenny, Cody and Jericho were being used as their US outreach in a lot of ways. Bucks as well. AEW is basically NJPW's US outreach attempt cleaved off to start their own rival company.

Re: Why is NJPW So Upset At AEW?

I'm just going to write of everything the op said because most of it isn't why New Japan isn't working with AEW. The only person New Japan aren't happy that didn't sign was Omega, the rest was expendable and easily replaceable (they have done so already). You're confusing ROH w/ New Japan.

As for why they aren't working with AEW. ROH and New Japan have had a long, stable relationship where they know the hierarchy of their relationship. New Japan aren't and shouldn't drop them just because people want "dream matches". ROH is also partners with CMLL, who have a relationship w/ New Japan that's integral for New Japan's future with their young lion system and the tours that CMLL wrestlers take part in. AEW are partners with AAA, who CMLL are hated rivals with. If New Japan partnered with AEW, they'd upset CMLL by proxy and the CMLL partnership is more important to New Japan than people realise. So that's the main reason why New Japan aren't willing to be partners with AEW, not some over exaggerated reason made by "wrestling journalists".

That's all there is to it. Jesus.

I understand them becoming direct competition, I just feel like from NJPW's standpoint, they have to understand that there was NO POSSIBLE WAY they were going to match the financial benefits, and creative freedom that AEW was going to offer. Hell, Kenny and The Bucks turned down big money offers from WWE multiple times to stick with NJPW, that has to mean something to them.

I still think being salty about the situation does them no good whatsoever, working together would elevate both of them, and yes, they will never be #2 in America, AEW will comfortably hold that position now, but NJPW still has a lot to gain from a partnership.

I think the Bucks said in a interview with Van Vliet that the relationship with NJPW was very bad.

It's their own fault for booking that MSG show in March knowing full well a bunch of their big US stars contracts were up in January and February.

Can't blame any of those guys for leaving for better opportunities closer to their families.
