Post The Positivity Thread

:talk

From me, Mr. Negativity.

If professional wrestling is a cyclical industry, full of peaks & valleys, WWE is arguably in one of its deepest valleys in company history from an entertainment perspective. The majority of the roster is uninteresting, lacks heat, can't draw or just straight-up suck. Any potential match that could be interesting is given away on free TV & then run into the ground until we don't care about it anymore. None of the WWE PPVs are worth the price that WWE is charging & the product is completely over-saturated as there's way too much supply for a limited amount of demand. That being said, they do occasionally show glimmers of hope & the entire show, from top to bottom, is not bad. It is just that sometimes the bad is so painful that you forget about the decent-to-good.

I thought, for a change of pace, at least for my constantly bitching ass, would be to talk about the stuff that I think DOESN'T suck. There is potential in some areas of WWE right now.

So, without any further ado:

C.M. Punk is great. Especially when he has a microphone in his hand. He has a very old school heel vibe to him. He is really entertaining to me. He reminds me of watching wrestling when I was growing up with family members. He is fun to hate & I want to hear everything he says. He's also more than capable in the ring, as his match with Chris Jericho on RAW this week showed.

The Shield are entertaining & are three guys with bright futures. As much as I might complain about WWE never building new stars or relying too much on guys from the past, here's The Shield, closing out shows & they all have a lot of potential & bright futures. Roman Reigns is a beast. Seth Rollings is a good worker. Ambrose is very charismatic. They are going to be big in the future.

Mark Henry is back. I love me some Mark Henry. Henry's last World Title run was a lot of fun. In modern WWE, not many heels are booked to be dominant as the majority of them are chickenshit instead. Henry is a refreshing change of pace as he's a dominant heel big man. Not unlike The Big Show I suppose but I am a lot more entertained by Henry.

Everything that Paul Heyman touches is gold. From his random quips, to his facial expressions to...anything. The dude is money. He's gold. He can make me care about an otherwise awful Vickie Guerrero segment. He does more for wrestlers in two minutes than the commentary can do in twenty. It's crazy.

Brock Lesnar is also a refreshing change of pace. I love that he signed a new contract so hopefully he'll be around more. I love that WWE currently don't have him talk at all. He just comes out & wrecks shit, like Godzilla. He gives no fucks. His massacre of Miz & his beating of McMahon last week were both gold. When his music hits, it's always an "oh shit" moment & wrestling needs more of those!

Antonio Cesaro is a great mid-card champion. I'm not real high on WWE having him lose clean on free TV but he's a great worker & is developing his character as more time goes on. I like him a lot & think he has a bright future as well. Not the greatest promo but he has a great look & is ox-strong so I don't think it'll hinder him. Definitely have to get him a new theme though. His song sucks & there's not an opening riff to let people even know who is coming out. Compare how his song starts to how Brock's starts.

For me, ever since his babyface turn, Alberto Del Rio is really working. Ricardo Rodriguez is great too. ADR is a good worker & has a great look. He used to bore me to tears when he was a heel, just cutting the same promo over & over while working the same boring, bland match over & over. His matches to me still come off as boring sometimes but at least he seems to have a fire about him again, a spark to him. He's really over right now & I think can be a big star down the road. He's well on his way. He's so good as a babyface, actually, that I'm curious why they ever wanted him to be a heel at all. Maybe just because he's foreign or maybe because of his cocky smile but he works as a face.

JBL on color commentary is also a breath of fresh air. Let's face it, Michael Cole & Jerry Lawler suck. JBL is funny & actually adds to the matches though. He puts over characters & wrestlers. He adds backstory to a match & provides the listening audience with information. He also has a very old school feel to him, like Punk. I dig him a lot & am glad that WWE brought him back full-time.

Titus O'Neil has even shown signs of having a lot of potential. The guy is genuinely funny. Not forced, poorly written WWE humor but like "he reminds me of a friend" funny. The guy that can always get you to laugh or smile by saying something silly. Too bad he's lumped with Darren Young.

Even Sheamus has been delivering the goods lately, certainly if we're talking about matches on Pay-Per-View. He might not always be my cup of tea on free TV, or when he's telling corny jokes (or talking in general) but his matches are always at the very least watchable & usually closer to pretty damn good. He had a great feud with The Big Show, for goodness sake.

So, there ya go. Being optimistic, there are definitely some shining stars on the roster, capable of being entertaining.

Re: The Positivity Thread

I agree with every single thing you said here, which is great for a change. Optimism in the face of bad odds and skepticism is a great power to wield. I try to do it all the time, but fail sometimes at it to unfortunately. I would only like to add 3 things to your list:

Daniel Bryan:
This man continues to make the most out of every segment he gets with his ever improving mic work and abundance of charisma. After tonight, it finally looks like wwe may start booking him seriously once again with his CLEAN win over former "super top face" Rey Mysterio, and may end up turning face resulting from a Kane heel turn? With all the tools he has honed already and the other ones he's mastered as of late, he may become a huge force as the next big top face after the Ryback experiment completes.

Damien Sandow:
This man has all the talent in the world with an absolutely top notch character, boatloads of charisma, impeccable mic work, perfect comedic timing, good size, an aggressive ring style, and a great look to boot. He has top heel/comedic face written all over him and now that his partnership with Cody Rhodes has finally ended it's time to reignite his singles push. Unlike the great Wade Barrett, Sandow possesses something that will force wwe to give him the top push whether they are planning to or not. He has that "IT" factor where all crowds react well to him and absolutely "GET" him, as I cannot stress how important that is. 2013 will be his year to rise to the very top of smackdown via a MITB win in the summer.

NXT Prospects of the Future:
Under the control of HHH, the entire farm system has been completely revamped. Everyone down there is being forced to come up with a creative and captivating character or else they will not make it. There is loads of proof over in the NXT subforum, where there are links to promos by ALL wrestlers in NXT, even the ones that haven't made it onto tv yet. There are interesting gimmicks everywhere found in those promos and, even if some need a bit of work, they are much improved over the countless flood of male model clones that scream genericbot3000. With can't miss talents like Bray Wyatt, Kassius Ohno, Corey Graves, Paige, Conor O'Brien, Neville & Grey, Leo Kruger, and many more future gems honing their craft just for the opportunity to get on NXT television the future is very bright. The last thing to add to this point, is that Triple H and crew aren't anywhere near finished scouting, which can be seen with the recent signing of El Generico, the indy tryouts they just held with many big names attending, and their keen interest in bringing in guys Samurai Del Sol, Sami Callihan, Adam Cole, Kevin Steen, and the Briscoes.

Langston just got called up & he has some potential. Paige is obviously going to be a star, for years to come. Kassius Ohno was great in ROH (and elsewhere) and seems to live/breathe wrestling, so I have no reason to believe he won't be successful. Bray Wyatt has a nice Waylon Mercy gimmick going & Leo Kruger is channeling his inner sadistic Skinner.

There is also a ton of knowledge within WWE, both backstage on RAW & with the NXT guys. You still have tremendously talented legends, with a plethora of knowledge to pass along, from guys like Dusty Rhodes, Arn Anderson, William Regal, Sgt. Slaughter, etc. walking around. I really hope there are some people making the most of that situation. I also like to believe that WWE gives its active roster access to that tremendous library of footage. So much stuff can be learned.

Positivity doesn't draw.

Nah, but seriously there are plenty of things to be positive about. The influx of new talent is refreshing and they have some talent staples.

Yep can't disagree with any of that. They must have plenty of people working with the developmental talents, because seeing guys that were once generic like Colin Cassidy deliver an epic "Daniel Day Lewis" style "Gangs of New York" gimmicked promo, tells me that every one of these guys is getting great advice and instruction on how to deliver the most suitable and interesting gimmicks for each of them.

Re: The Positivity Thread

I'm not trying to say that there's not still a ton of problems with the show(s). I am just trying to point out that not everything is the "worst shit ever."

I am not as high on some people as a lot of others. I am not a fan of current Daniel Bryan at all. I think Cody Rhodes, Damien Sandow & Dolph Ziggler are extremely overrated as well, for some examples. However, I just wanted to point out that things aren't as dire as some people, myself often included, would lead everyone to believe.

I would argue that RAW on Monday was more good than bad.

Re: The Positivity Thread

Things that I like with current WWE:

The production values are top notch, this includes the lighting, camera work, pyro and Kevin Dunn's excellent video packages.

The back and forths on the mic between (mostly) Punk and Rock were entertaining, it's just a shame that their match was so dire...

Paul Heyman is brilliant every week. He's the WWE's best actor, mic worker, manager (so much competition for that one!), etc. Basically he's the best in show at everything apart from actual wrestling/in-ring work. Even then he's probably better than 25% of the current roster

JBL is mostly excellent on commentary although his constant baiting of Michael Cole can be distracting. I'm also glad that Cole is a babyface again because it was silly having the lead announcer as a heel.

WWE are starting to call up new talents from NXT, even if some of them seem green and like they're the wrong options (Big E Langston). At least the intent is there.

I'm struggling to think of much else.

Yeh Titus O´neill is one guy I want to see more of solo. This guy is huge, have the mic skills. WWE could easily make him a badass mofo.

I just thought of another one...AJ isn't the Raw GM anymore and the show doesn't completely revolve around her now.
