Is WWE taking a pop at the AE?

What with that Mae Young thing? I know the AE had some things that feel awkward looking back but when the ideas worked the ideas worked. I find that today people look back at the AE nostalgically but also are critical. For instance people say that the AE didn't have as good wrestling or there was less of it. But I would differ. When I relook at the AE matche, especially on Raw and Smackdown, they tend to be shorter yes but the pacing was a lot faster. Hell they even ran to the ring to maximize time. Wrestling for me is a lot like film. You know when a film goes on waaay too long? Wrestling is like that with rest holds. But anyway I digress. The AE had some weirdness from having to compete with WCW but atleast it wasn't boring. This year everything is booked around when the Rock returns and everything else is awful or filler.

Half true they had some moments but like you stated
they seem to get all happy/serious when The Rock is
around.

Incase you did NOT know, That segment drew over 400,000 viewers.

Mae Young draws more than the WWE Champion CM Punk and John Cena combined.

Yes, because the entirety of the attitude era can be summed up and represented by a Mae Young joke. Everything else was unnecessary side stuff to that one scene.

A very bad parody of the probably worst segment of AE > current WWE

WWE makes fun of itself all the time, both of the current and past product. Daniel Bryan is basically satirizing himself.

WWE favorites: Punk, Sheamus, Lesnar, Ambrose, Rollins, Reigns,
Del Rio, Orton, Bryan, Ziggler, Wyatt, Usos, Cesaro, Mysterio, Kane
DGPW: Doi, Yoshino, Tozawa, Yamato, Dragon Kid, BxB Hulk, Ricochet, Super Shisa
NJPW: Okada, Nakamura, Styles ROH: Briscoes, Fish and O'Reilly, Young Bucks
All-Time: Rock, Punk, Lesnar, Angle
