Re: Has Punk Ever Beat Cena Clean?

I completely consider the MITB victory clean. Cena got his focus back on the match when Punk hit the GTS. I consider it clean, especially considering Punk was the one originally distracted.

Re: Has Punk Ever Beat Cena Clean?

What is this forum's obsession with heels beating faces clean?? It rarely happens and usually only happens to older faces, not to faces currently on top of the company.

Check out the pilot for my webshow WISHFUL THINKING. It is a show about a college student who fucks up his day and a Genie grants him the opportunity to do it all over again and he finds new and creative ways to fuck it up even more.

Watch Episode 3 of WISHFUL THINKING.
The Date: Rob tries not to fuck up a hot date and does it anyways.

This has been my thought exactly.

Throughout the history of pro wrestling, it really is quite uncommon for heels to get clean wins over top faces. Those that do get those clean wins, are typically beastly heels that are booked as unstoppable monsters who destroy everyone in thier path. That, of course, gives in to the storyline of the top face finally overcoming the beast that kept him down.

Ric Flair is arguably the most successful (championship wise) heel in modern wrestling, and during his heel championship runs, it was very unusual for him to win cleanly. Particularly during his run with the Four Horsemen, as outside interference was a staple of the stable in protecting thier top man when he had the belt. He was also quite well known for using foreign objects, and more notable in his latest runs in WWE, was his use of the "hidden" low blow as a way to get himself over the competition.

Clean wins really do seem to be overrated these days. There's no reason for a heel to win fairly. They are heels, after-all. Thier job is to make us hate them. What better way to do that than to that than screw over the guys we're "supposed" to root for? Credibility be damned. A heel that wins cheap is just as credible as one that wins clean. Either way they do it, they can still get the win. And it really shouldn't matter how it's done, as long as there's the knowledge that they can go over anyone at any time, by any means necessary. That fact alone should make it more meaningful when a face goes over them.

Re: Has Punk Ever Beat Cena Clean?

Agree with the two above posts.

Heels are traditionally pretty much built to lose in the end.

But then again, a lot of traditional things have changed so who knows?

As for this particular circumstance. Nope Punk hasn't but I don't think Cena ever has either? And Punk has got more high-profile 'un-clean' wins on Cena than Cena has on him.

Re: Has Punk Ever Beat Cena Clean?

Holding onto the title is how a heel establishes credibility

The Flairs, the Hollywood Hogans, the JBL's, the Triple H in evolution. It doesnt have to be pretty, but their selling point is they'll do everything possible to hold onto that belt even if it kills them. Essentially what it sets up is, its damn impossible to win the title. So when the face somehow beats down the entire army of supporters, the foreign objects, the crooked refs and the cheating and finally beats the cheating heel, its immensely credible

A good example is Goldberg beating Hogan. Or Goldberg vs Triple H. Or Sting beating Flair. Cena vs JBL was supposed to be like that. Benoit vs Triple H is an example
