Raw 08/27/2012 Discussion: State Of The Game

What, exactly, is WWE Champion CM Punk planning next following his controversial attack of Jerry “The King” Lawler last Monday on Raw? Will he, in fact, take up on John Cena’s offer for a title match at Night of Champions in Cena’s hometown of Boston? And what will Triple H have to say when the vanquished King of Kings makes his first public appearance since losing to Brock Lesnar at SummerSlam?

Long live the king?

One week after Brock Lesnar unceremoniously announced he was leaving WWE via Tout, his now-injured SummerSlam opponent, Triple H, is set to return to Raw to give the WWE Universe an address of his own. Speculation about whether it’s truly “Game Over” for Triple H has been running rampant for the past week, and it seems like every Superstar except Triple H himself has weighed in on the state of the COO’s in-ring career. Expect The Game — re-broken arm and all — to set the record straight.

Do ya feel lucky, Punk?

WWE Champion CM Punk seemed to reach his breaking point last week when both John Cena and Jerry Lawler refused to acknowledge him as The Best in the World, kicking “The King” in the head from behind after Cena laid down a potential challenge for Punk’s title at Night of Champions. With The Second City Saint growing more disgruntled by the day, and with the power to name his own No. 1 contender, will he take Cena up on his offer? And who else will be asked to pay respect or pay the price when Raw reconvenes? Find out this Monday at 8/7 CT.

WWE has been building a TON of hype over the last week questioning whether Trips is retiring or not after the devastating loss to Brock. We know he isn't so I am intrigued where they are really going with this angle. Hopefully, it’s not a rematch with Lesnar. That should be done. I would like to see them use this angle to start a new feud. Maybe this could be a good opportunity to have someone attack Triple H and kick off a new angle from there. Then again, tonight could be Triple H announcing that he is taking some time off for now, and he'll just pick the Lesnar feud back up around Survivor Series. I hope they leave us with something more than Trips just announcing that he's leaving. It would be very underwhelming if they don't leave us with an intriguing hook.

As for the WWE Title picture, I am enjoying what they are doing with Punk's character these last few weeks. When Punk is pitted against Cena those two bring out the best in each other. The last portion of Cena's promo was delivered well even though his 'fans respect me more therefore I get main event slots and you don't' argument is a bit iffy. Punk/Lawler should be continuing their dispute this week which may be the best aspect of the character progression for Punk. Punk feels disrespect by a few things but he's taking the accusations that "he turned his back on The WWE Universe" personally which I love because he actually has not officially turned on the fans, yet. He has a legit reason to be angry with Lawler even if he is handling the situation in a bullying way.

The justifiable heel character is a captivating direction to take Punk and it's one of the reasons I loved Jericho's 'Honest Man' character a couple of years ago or even Punk's sanctimonious Straight Edge Savior character. The bad guy who feels he is justified is not one-dimensional, and he has a plausible motivation to act dasterdly. The character probably still needs to fleshed out and fully solidied as 'the guy you are supposed to hate' for the fans that have not quite digested the turn in Punk. For instance, a month after Punk attacked the biggest face in the industry I still see people questioning if he is heel or face partly because of the factors I mentioned why Punk has changed. Punk is a heel but much of his angst and actions are a response to what he feels is unfair treatment of the holder of the richest prize in the WWE. Punk's not evil and doing bad things for the sake of being dirty (yet), but he's demanding Cena to acknowledge the WWE Champion as "The Best In The World" and Cena wouldn't even give him the benefit of the doubt on that point. That's another legit gripe for Punk, a guy who has been WWE Champion for over nine months and counting. After a nine month WWE Championship reign Punk still has to solidify his existence to the world? To Cena? Punk kicked Lawler in the head because from Punk's perspective he has done nothing wrong, he has been wronged. Punk's going to make things right his way whether anyone [soon to include the WWE Universe] likes it or not. I'm looking forward to seeing how this all progresses to Night Of Champions in Boston.

Much gratitude to
CHAMPviaDQ

The fact that WWE has been teasing that HHH's career is done means HHH's announcement will be that he's NOT retiring.I don't know what's next for Trips but a feud with Mark Henry might be next since Mark said he has "plans" for him when he comes back

This whole Cena/Punk feud and the whole "you don't respect me" shit is fucking ridiculous and unbelievable just because Punk and Cena get along fine in real life and have tremendous respect for each other. It's kind of like Cena/Orton where we all know they are best friends in real life

holy shit the Divas actually part of the five point preview. When is the last time that happened?

Triple H just get on with it and leave.

Punk I expect to go even further down the deep end and eventually except Cena's challenge.

Ziggler, I believe will start a program with Orton (for 1 month since Orton is leaving for his movie). Don't care about Ziggler anyways.

I am interested to see Bryan's classes and how Kane gets involved (patient, teacher, or party crasher)

It's a tv show......

You really think Mr.McMahon really hated Austin alot? Or HHH-Stephs relationship was like how we saw on tv. Or Bret-Owen hated each other?

If anything, the fact that they're friends in real life, makes the tv stuff even better, because it means they'll have real great chemistry.

Won't be watching live this time.

I am looking forward to Punk rebuttal to what Cena said last week, along with his conflicts with Jerry Lawler(maybe have him beat Jerry in a squash match or something?). HHH angle is also interesting, as Clique said they need to put a hook on the end of it. If he simply says "I'm done" then it will be quite underwhelming. That being said whenever Triple H does return, I hope he does not have a rematch with Brock Lesnar.

As for smaller things, the things of interest will be the Intercontinental Championship(who will Miz face at NOC?) and of course Daniel Bryan's anger management lessons! I am sure they will lead to some golden segments like his interview with the "doctor". Another Wade Barrett vignette aswell as some decent matches would also be nice.
