How Do You Retire The Undertaker?

It seems to me that Undertaker's career is definitely heading towards the closing stages. He can't keep rehabbing these injuries and coming back.

Everybody seems to be talking about who he'll face at Wrestlemania 27, but I don't hear many suggestions for how WWE would retire a character like The Deadman.

It's the sort of gimmick where the logical end would be for somebody to put his career "to rest" for good. But I really can't see WWE allowing Undertaker to lose at Wrestlemania and the idea of him retiring at another event is almost just as unlikely. So how do you think it's going to happen?

I wrote a blog piece here speculating on Undertaker's Retirement At Wrestlemania 27 which sums up where I think it's going.

Whenever Undertaker does eventually retire, I would be amazed if WWE managed to resist bringing him back at a Wrestlemania in the future. It would just be too much easy money.

If it isn't after going 20-0 at WM after beating Cena then I hope it's at say survivor series.

An epic ending would be after an epic 30 min+ match (hard to believe with them these days) between him and kane (with both going FULL out) they are both left barely standing in the middle of the ring covered in eachother's blood, slowly exchanging massive blows, then GONG, the lights go out and when they come back on they are both gone. Gone from WWE forever.

the idea of having him retire right after his 20-0 match would be good. If he is barely able to get up from his win after the match and someone like Cena helps him up after even being defeated and have some more of the stars come out to guide him out and he gives one last arm raise with his back turned to the WWE universe.

I answered in a different thread on this and i think the send of has to suit the character and be mystical. He can come out after show for a speech etc... on tv we dont need to see that. Taker is the only character i dnt like seeing break kayfabe.

And this is how id have the rest of his career go.

Undertaker comes back for Royal Rumble and then beats Kane in another gimmick match which in a perfect world retires Kane in january. (but thats for a different thread)

Taker then drops the title to Wade Barratt at No way out thanks to interference from now heel Cena. (Too start the Cena Taker build for WM)

Taker beats Cena at WM (no titles involved) then Taker loses to Cena at backlash. (Just to even the score)

Then Through June July and August start the Taker retirement story to run through the summer ending in November at next years Survivor Series. Theme being Taker now hasnt enough left to beat the youngsters. Fued with the Nexus for a few months with Gabriel, Slater, (returning skip sheffield) all picking up wins over Taker who like with the Kane storyline just doesnt seem to have it anymore. This theme continues through the months.

After Summerslam Paul Bearer returns with a large hooded cloak wearing man + lots of druids saying Taker its time to go home. During taker matches the druids appear and start making there way to the ring slowly while taker is losing. Every week getting that little bit closer down the ramp. But then when Taker digs down deep and pulls out the win the lights go black and the druids vanish. Then each week they get closer (throughout September and october). Untill one week when the large hooded figure is getting over the ropes when taker wins a match.

Taker visibly shaken by this calls out Bearer and they make a match for Survivor Series. Taker vs the grim reaper. After the match Taker (wins) but the druids enter the ring anyway under instruction from Bearer and they all surround taker covering him completly. Lights go out. Bell Tolls. Smoke fills the arena Bell Tolls some more and then the lights come back on Taker is gone. With just his hat left in the ring.

Someone should finally end his Wrestlemania winning streak and then he lies down in the casket himself and then the druids take him away and he's gone forever. They can say his Wrestlemania streak was what was keeping him alive or something

Win or retire match? Too easy for people to come to terms with? I think that would be a good way to go about it but hey ho.

I also think when it does happen at WM 28 (even if he has to take 9 months off and work rumble - mania) He will be carried out on his symbol by the druids...

failling that a casket match similar to the one with yokozuna and he will appear on the tron calling it the end of darkness and that the deadman will liveon in the conciousness of the WWE forever but the physical entity known as the dead man will from now on, Rest...In...Peace!!!! *eyeball thing and CG bright light engulfing the screen* Lightning hits the casket, up in flames and lowered down on a trap door, never to be seen from again as the gong tolls.

Personally i'd just before him to win at Wrestlmania, and then the next night on Raw have him come out in his normal clothes and not in make up, and give a big speech and send off. You could do it at Mania as well, but the card tends to be jam packed and there's only so much time you have to make a speech even if it is The Undertaker. But i'll rather see him retire like that, then by some supernatural ending, which to me seems anti climatic to and legendary wrestler.

That would suck though. The only character who has never ever broke kayfabe. Breaks kayfabe to retire. wouldnt fit.

I see it happening exactly like it did for Shawn Michaels. Undertaker loses his final match at WrestleMania. After the winner celebrates, Undertaker poses in the ring and walks backstage as WrestleMania comes to a close.

The next night on Raw, he comes out on his motorcycle in his badass attire and addresses the crowd on a more realistic level than he could as the dead man.

I can't see it happening anywhere else than Wrestlemania, even Survivor Series would feel like a second-rate sendoff in comparison. I also personally think he'll call it quits once he reaches 20-0. I liked how things played out at Bragging Rights, and it actually felt a little eerie because that's probably the kind of deal we'll get with a full-blown retirement. Maybe in his final match, he'll just about manage to tombstone his opponent and literally crawl over for the win. Then he tries to sit up but is too exhausted, then gets carried away by druids with a bunch of supernatural crap happening around them?

Or maybe he wins, then is actually attacked by his own druids as his time is up and they want a new entity to represent their POWAHZ? I don't ever see the Undertaker gimmick being passed on, but there's bound to be another dark character stepping up once Taker retires.

I've seen it mentioned before that Paul Bearer comes out after Taker wins at Mania and telling him something like "Its time to come home" and taker following him out. That was pretty much messed up when they did the return/switch crap just recently.

I do see what you mean with Taker not really retiring this time, and coming back on an even more limited schedule. I am not sure if he will do this though, probably depends on Taker and what he wants for his future. Personally I would not want to spend 9 months getting in decent shape just to get back in the ring for a couple months and get re injured every year, but that's just me.

agreed, I would like to see him go to 20-0, poses with lights/smoke etc, then the druids come out, encircle him while he drops to one knee, lights go out and when they come back on he's gone.

His opponent gives him the stipulation of: 'if he wins then he'll have to retire or if he loses he can stay'. That way, Taker can retire at the top of his game. Think of it as the Dudley Boyz stipulation from GAB 2004, if he wins then Bearer gets buried, if he loses then he saves Bearer's life.

The Last Match of the night for the WWE Title, some young upcomer who just won the title at Elimination Chamber or Rumble, Have Taker lose clean, puttin over the young talent and then the young talent can give Taker the ring to thank the fans, and walk up the ramp like Shawn and Flair.

How do you retire the undertaker?
1)ask ric flair how to retire...or on second thought, don't do that
2)Have Vince Russo make a quick return to WWE so he can book a career on a poll match where the winner gets to keep his career and then overbook the ending of the match tna style so that the deadman is screwed out of his victory...there you go, everyone goes home "happy"
3)Let orton give him 2 consecutive punts...ah i can see the hate threads now...

Michelle McCool end the streak at WM 30 and everthing is over :D

The question is... do you retire in character or let him break character to show the fans his appreciation. IMO, ending it in character is best, but you can't ever tell with the WWE. I would think it would be hard for him to hold back the emotion but that's just my thought.
