Analyzing Paige's run on the main roster.

To start off, I just want to say that I hated the way Paige debuted. She just shows up and beats AJ, the longest reigning Divas champion with one of the worst finishers I've ever seen. LAAAAAME!!!

Sure WWE probably thought they were being shocking, but shocking isn't the same as good booking. When you go over the Diva's champion, who's left? Short answer is no one....-_-and THAT'S because of a....quite frankly, terrible divas disvision. The Bellas are mediocre at best, Alicia Fox can't act, and while athletic, is rather sloppy in the ring. Naomi is well known for botching, but is also a great athlete, and a decent talker, but she was still featured on Total Divas, and was still recovering from the harsh roasting that AJ dropped on Total Divas...

Lol, WWE was so desperate to find challengers for Paige, they EVEN decided to give Cameron a chance!!! Did you hear me?!? FUCKING....CAMERON!!!!! Y'know, the same chick who can't remember the opponent has to be on their back in order for them to be pinned?!? Just fucking sad...:crying:

Not to mention Paige's character went from being a badass, anti diva, to a timid, mousey, little girl scout who looked completely out of place sharing a ring with AJ. The fact that they let her lose to this horrible new babyface Paige just shows this company can't book their way out of a wet paper bag.

After a bit, Paige turns heel and becomes more sinister and sexy, teasing many make out scenes with AJ.....most of which just ended up with pecks on the hand....is AJ the Godfather? :p

I do like Paige as a talent, but WWE JUST isn't the place to be a female wrestler!!!!

Paige is now part of the team called "PCB", and a part of an angle that isn't going anywhere, which makes you wonder why this was even an idea in the first place!! Just look at the way PCB got destroyed by Miz on the mic, and I HATE that little fuck!!!!

To sum up, Paige is a solid worker, she might not be the world's best talker, or the most charismatic, but she's hot as hell and good at what she does, and at the end of the day, I care about ring work the most, but that's just me. Unless she improves as a talker, I can't see her as the face of the Diva's division, but as a heel should could remain a formidable contender for the Diva's title.

What about the rest of you?

For the record guys, I'm not just being cynical for the sake of it, I just call it like I see it. You CAN'T just throw together an angle and expect everyone to get excited when you put ZERO time and creativity into it!!! A bunch of meaningless matches does NOT a revolution make!!! You have to DO something with it!!!

I can say that I'm about to rob a convenient store, but if I just walk in there with no weapon to threaten the clerk with, he'll just laugh in my face, then pull out his shotgun and probably blow my brains out!!! Words are useless without action!!!

Rant over....like I said, what's your opinion on Paige's run on the main roster?

She didn't do anything, end of story. all we got out of it in the long run is an annoying and unoriginal catchphrase "this is my house".

She's overrated in the ring(absolutely embarrassing for someone who's wrestled since she was a kid, she should be the best on the roster yet she's not), poor mic skills, lack of charisma, panders more than John Cena, she isn't a draw, send her back to developmental.

What is it with all these different threads on the same topics lately?

Everyone knows what Paige's first year was like there has been multiple threads on this topic,

Cliff notes

AJ up announces she wants time off for her wedding after retaining the title at Mania (one thing I can guarantee had she given WWE prior notice to this she would have dropped the belt at Mania, AJ just wanted a selfish Mania moment)

Because AJ just beat the entire roster in said match they had no credible contender to put the title on, so who can they use? Oh we have Paige up from NxT shes being doing Wrestlemania Axxess promotions, shes super over and the divisions top baby face.

Debut Paige as timid little fan girl congratulating AJ and gaining a impromptu title match and winning with a Paige Turner which to this day I still maintain AJ botches by over selling and mistiming.

Paige then goes on to have boring 3 min matches with the likes of Aksana, Tamina and Alicia Fox (who I swear had about 10 matches in the space of AJ absence) with no character and no sign of the actual Anti Diva gimmick that got her over in the first place then loses her first televised match in her home country of all places. Then used to break up Cameron and Naomi.

Now for 2 of the biggest mistakes they ever booked for her, dropping the title back to AJ the day she returned and then giving her the title right back again at Summerslam I can appreciate the title win on her birthday stuff and at the time I was happy about it but in retrospect this title reign should not have happened at all. Then have her drop the title at the next PPV was just plain stupid and made the Summerslam win even more pointless. The only good thing to come out this story with AJ was her heel turn some of her work as a heel was great but somehow they fucked that up too by having her run away from AJ and job again.

Slowly pushed back away from the title picture while Nikki and AJ did their thing for a while where she started putting on better matches on Main Event etc regaining fan support eventually face turning again which I would say happened when her team lost at Survivor Series.

The Bella bullying angle starts up with which has up to this point had no pay off for Paige what so ever but somehow AJ gets involved after returning from more time off and gets the payoff at Mania for herself while Paige carries the match for the team. More Bella bullying after AJ leaves and Naomi heel turn to write her off TV for a while, Paige returns and I swear is the only returning Superstar to have a run in without her music playing to get a pop. More Bella bullying and this time Foxy arrives to help them.

Diva Revolution starts and Paige is teamed with 2 of the 3 newcomers which right off the bat which restricts Paige's match options and leaves her as team jobber as Becky and Charlotte need wins and pins to establish them now I marked like fuck when Becky joined her it was something I've always wanted but Charlotte shouldn't have been with them they needed to use someone like Emma who has an established "friendship" with Paige from NxT.

Paige's first year has been a booking disaster and she has not come out looking anything like the Paige we saw in NxT, now is it any wonder she's gained very apathetic criticism on this forum, the only positive we can take from this first year is her fan base has actually grown and she is still fairly popular with casual audiences so there is still time to salvage her but they need to end these 3 teams revolution crap and get some singles feuds going especially with Becky, Charlotte and Sasha because I think then we'll see the quality of her matches raise when does face them also a little resolution to the Bella story because for once I love to see WWE end a diva storyline instead of abandoning them and it would be good booking to have Paige end Nikki's run (another longest reign) after all the stuff that happened earlier in the year, she is the best option to transition the title on to Charlotte or Sasha too because I don't see Nikki putting anything near the quality of match Charlotte or Sasha deserve for their first title run.

I'll start off by saying I was a huge Paige mark when she debuted, I heard a lot of good things about her and I was excited when she took the title off of AJ.

What followed after winning the title is what turned me off for good. She started her reign by having very poor to bad matches, her mic skills were plain awful, nothing about her promos made me like her at all, her delivery was bad, she wasn't and still isn't that confident while speaking and her accent just cemented the fact that she is just a very bad mic worker. ( not that just because she has an accent she is bad on the mic, look at Barrett, the guy is one of the best on the mic and his accent adds to it )

I kept hearing how she was the anti diva and blah blah blah but all I saw was a very pale girl with black hair and an obsession for Hot Topic. She showed no personality other than screaming " THIS IS MY HOUSE " After every poorly performed move she does such as the miles away headbutt's or the miles away knees or the miles away dropkick or the miles away... That's pretty much all the moves she has.

She lost the title and I was glad, it only took me a month to wish she'd lose the title already and when it happened I marked. I thought Haitch finally came to his senses but he proved me wrong a month later when she won it again. And the cycle continued until she once again lost to AJ. Both title reigns were bad and forgettable and that is the reason I think she hasn't won the title again.

Now she's part of the divas revolution rightfully playing fodder to Sasha Banks, a vastly superior talent.

So when it comes down to it, she was pushed to the moon on her debut, didn't back it up and now is where she should be, away from the title and jobbing to superior talents.

While we're on here I read somewhere paiges comic con line last week in Chicago was one of the biggest turn outs for a wrestler in their history. Congrats to her. Met her in the city 2 weeks ago and she's a gem with her fans, I always believed majority of her fans were male but she had a large female crowd turn out too which was interesting.

#7 ·
Yeah man good for her, but still...at least try to see where I'm coming from, okay?

It just turns my stomach that we have soooo much talent, and yet WWE does not use it to its maximum potential., every damn thing has to be THEIR way!!! God forbid one talent ever get over organically, nope gotta put out that flame before something good comes of it!!!

Still though, it's cool Paige has her fans, I hear she's a sweet girl in real life. Props to her! :grin2:

What we got:

A few weeks/months of optimism followed by disappointment.

That whole pseudo anti-diva thing

Underwhelming performances in the ring and on the mic.

A personality that's gradually become one of the most hated women's wrestlers on the roster, particularly in the last month or two. Her time on Tough Enough, Total Divas and behaviour on social media has contributed to this.

Cringe-worthy moments. Basically any time she says her "this is my house" catchphrase, those screams she does, or those "loser" taunts she does after a match (she's supposed to be a face).

Thank god for Sasha and the other NXT girls. Hopefully Kana can steal a bit more of her screen-time in the future as well.

#3 ·
With her horrible booking she managed to become the most over diva and draws crazy crowds for every signing. Which is probably why WWE chooses her for everything . I think her natural charisma draws so many to her more than her talents which are good too imo. If WWE booked her like in nxt she may be better off but as far as being popular which is all that matters she made it as a talent. I hope with time she gets better story lines though.

#6 ·
You shouldn't need Total Divas to establish yourself though!!! Besides which, Paige, as an anti diva, shouldn't want anything to do with that reality show crap!!! It's a complete contradiction of her original character.

It's bad enough they're referred to as "divas", but now we're supposed to view them as reality show stars? Why can't we just call them what they're supposed to be, what they've trained themselves to be....WRESTLERS?!?

Jesus, it's like this company deliberately goes out of they're way to make it impossible to give the divas a chance!!!

Sigh....I just don't get it. :crying:

Lol rlstern now has turned his propaganda and hatred from aj to paige. Anyone who gets more over than his favorite sucks. Not surprised this is the guy who negged me for calling Austin a draw. Yes you read that right austin.

Who's this supposed favorite and when did I mention any of my favorites in that post?

Paige isn't a huge draw.

The Divas Revolution did a good job of showing the way the main roster and working with the Bellas destroys talent, so it was kind of funny seeing all of the Paige haters having to suddenly realize a lot of their hate on her was predicated on bullshit and no matter who you are, there's many hurdles to climb on the main roster. Especially if you're not someone's daughter or wife or girlfriend who matters.

Paige seems like she's a great PR person and marketable female. She hasn't had the opportunity to do anything on the main roster in terms of actual work, no storylines with men, no feuds with women who can work, she's been there biding her time for the rest of the talents to come up. So I don't really see the point in 'analyzing' something that hasn't had the chance to get off the ground yet. She's not a superstar or anything, but gaining any popularity at all given the situation she was in is pretty impressive. She should have failed much harder.

Paige is ridiculously bad on the mic, and average in the ring. She's over because she's actually the biggest Diva WWE has when it comes to flaunting her sexuality.

Her biggest problem is her fans though who touted her as the greatest thing ever...I expected to be blown away by Paige but she never delivers.

This.

Paige got over because she was the hot topic girl replacing the outgoing geek lolita in a sea of Divas that look like supermodels and cheerleaders. Just another piece of fantasy in the Divas Harem.

From what I can see, Paige is good in the ring but wasn't used to working with the cameras and non-stiff style. Her 'this is my house' taunts are cringe-worthy.

Ok my personal take on Paige's main roster turn is this

She started out as a character she had no business playing with the whole "Shy girl" routine where she'd have underdog matches that was 90% getting beat then the comeback and wasn't exactly where she should be in the ring. Then her title reign was terrible by all accounts because her character was barely cutting promos and when she was, they were shy babyface type promos where the main highlights was a semi-decent match with Brie Bella that ended in DQ and a couples match with Alicia Fox.

They threw Paige in the deep end for the sole purpose of killing time while AJ prepped for her wedding with Punk and none of it worked out.

Then she had her second "title reign" that was given to her as a birthday gift because that's what they think of the title where she had her best main roster match up until that point at Summerslam 2014 with AJ Lee along with her best promo in the Night of Champions video package for the 3 way match...any heat/reaction she might have had was cooled by that point and she was stuck playing a psycho lesbian character.

Then until Total Divas she was relegated to WWE Superstars and main event after that Survivor Series match. That's when she came back and gave Nikki Bella her best match at WWE Main Event and then went on to have some entertaining matches on Main Event against Emma and Summer Rae along with a tag match against The Bellas on Main event that was good. At this point, she had managed to get herself over again now as a semi-aggressive face.

Then comes the rough patch, where she came back from the movie, delivered a solid promo against The Bellas on Smackdown, had two good matches with Fox but let Herself get stuck in a tired match formula for a bit during the early stages of this whole "Revolution" angle.

However, she managed to deliver the best "Revolution" match with Sasha Banks where two played off each other well and simply had a well paced, fluid match where Paige started switching up her offense and then went and had a decent singles match with Naomi.

She's still over with the fans simply because she stands out above all else, we can sit here and say "oh she's over because this and this and this and this" or whatever the fuck we feel it is but case in point she stands out and the fans gravitated to her for that reason.

Overall, her main roster career is bunch of high and lows like Jericho's was when he first got into WWE.

I also have a feeling the other NXT girls are going to have to go through those highs and lows as well.

Perhaps not, but that match and others of a similar quality helped set the groundwork for what was to come. It made people take notice and raised the stock not only of these two and others, but also of the overall womens wrestling division in NXT.

A large portion of the current audience were caught off guard and thought "shit, WWE allow women to actually wrestle with respectable booking?" Heck, some were even surprised that the women could wrestle at all based on what they've been watching for years before.

The anti-diva thing is an interesting analysis. What people should remember though is that she hasn't been promoted as the 'anti-diva' since her NXT days. What is an 'anti-diva' anyway? Who cares. It's a brand tagline that is intended to help someone stand out as an individual entity. She looks aesthetically different to what a lot of people thought WWE divas were about, and frankly, that's all that was needed.

As for Paige herself, the run she's had on the main roster has largely been awful from a booking standpoint. People were always expecting too much based on exceptionally high standards they set for her, but she was ruined within the first month in many people's eyes. Her two title runs were non-events (like most have been, to be fair) and what people wanted to see from the 'anti-diva' in NXT has not been replicated on the roster.

I don't know about a 'terminator' Paige but she came across as a stoic, stern stand-alone down there, and who didn't have a problem with sexy but was more intent on proving herself. That's what got her over and it wasn't what people were presented with on the main stage.

While the booking has been pretty horrible from the get go, there's also no defending the in-defensible from a performance standpoint. The first impression she made on people was a botched Paige Turner. Many considered the feud with AJ Lee to be terrible, which was magically meant to fix everything wrong with the divas division. She was also very recently involved in a promo that made her and her team mates look worse than before. I don't think anyone can say with confidence that she's been shown in WWE to be an outstanding talent, because she hasn't been. By all means though, I encourage her most fervent and hardcore fans to engage with me on that point if they disagree.

There have been positives though. For starters, what's worthy of consideration is that Paige has reached the level she's at without using a male presence on the roster as a crutch. This was a mark against the idea of women being seen as individual stars.

It's true that she hasn't had a 'huge' moment, and that most of her stardom has been achieved when promoted as a character outside of the ring, but she's at a point now where she's an established presence without even interacting with a male wrestler on the shows. AJ Lee and the Bellas had their biggest moments when involved with romantic themes, as did Kelly Kelly, Wilson, Kiebler, etc. Lita and Trish were also involved with men during certain parts of their respective stints too.

What's more is that Paige has only been on the roster for a year and a half and she's accumulated a net worth that isn't far behind the Bellas--who have been around for much longer. Net worth isn't everything to this company of course, but it's an important indicator of an individual's worth. It also shows how smart it was to get involved in Total Divas to show that she's a team player, which then lead her to a prominent role on Tough Enough.

Fans should appreciate the idea that with Paige being a recognized act nowadays, it means that they can push others too in the hopes they can be stars. They had the Bellas, Paige feud be stretched out to the point of banality because there was no one else aside from Naomi that was worthy of time. This new influx of wrestlers means this doesn't always have to be the case anymore, but that's if they do things properly of course.

With this in mind, Paige has done a good thing by the business in helping put over Sasha Banks the way she has. The rest is up to the company though. It's been a redundant angle so far; arguably not as risky as Paige's initial run from a booking standpoint, but it has been hit with more negative feedback recently. Honestly, the angle's conclusion probably won't end up as hoped but that's the pattern most things seem to follow these days.

Lets see....

They ruined her awesome NXT character when she debuted by making her a happy, smiley underdog and booked her weak, barely able to beat people like Aksana.
She was obviously a place holder champion for AJ.
When AJ returned she become AJ's crazy, copycat frenemy.
WWE messed up her vs AJ badly with stupid booking.
When they finally abandoned the AJ feud and let her be a heel/more like herself it was her best spell and she was great. (October to maybe start of January).
Then when AJ was 'injured' WWE put her in a feud with the Bellas for months that basically meant jobbing to them and being robbed of the title more times than I can count.
Just when it looked like it was going to be her vs Nikki at WM31, AJ returned and ruined it with the stupid tag team thing.
Once AJ retired, it was back to the Bellas feud and more jobbing to them.
Started a crusade for change as part of the Bellas feud but that was hi-jacked by Stephanie and she was ignored/forgotten because WWE forgot she was in NXT as well.
More jobbing, this time to Team BAD, while her 'team mates' beat anyone/everyone in sight and never lost.
Summerslam - she didn't even get to finally beat the Bellas in the big 'payoff' match because Becky did.
More jobbing, this time to the Bellas again.

Yes they gave her tons of other things to do but wrestling-wise they treat her like crap. She's had shocking booking from the start and never booked strong, (though that is nothing new with the Divas), been a place holder champion twice and the Bella's personal enhancement talent. Had a potentially good feud with AJ ruined by WWE's incompetence. Had another potentially good feud with the Bellas ruined by stupid/lazy booking, delaying tactics so Nikki can beat AJ's record and Stephanie denying her the chance at a big moment/payoff (introducing the NXT diva helpers) and taking all her glory.

Basically WWE took all the good stuff from NXT, all the potential and shat all over it. Now she barely has any credibility at all and is a glorified jobber.

Did I miss anything?

Interesting rant, the way I've always looked at it AJ knew the Divas from their past matches so she knew strengths/weaknesses of the Bellas, Alicia etc but Paige was a wildcard who AJ had no experience of which was topped off by the unexpectedness of Paige's debut or how she rose to the challenge made by AJ.
Outside of kayfabe, AJ had respect for Paige and was willing to put her over above all the other roster while doing a running feud with Paige that went full-circle to end in a tagteam victory over the Bellas at WM.
PCB & this divas revolution angle is simple : Face team PCB, Heel team BAD both competing for Nikki's belt and inbetween we get Sasha, Becky and Sasha showcased to the MR crowds to get those fans who aren't clued up of NXT more familiar while generating multiple match-ups that essentially balance out each other.

She was given too much with two title reigns with no character. She was fine when her and Natalya started feuding with the Bellas. TD has helped her a lot, in the same vein that it helped Tyson Kidd. Her catchphrase is annoying though. I don't understand the TE complaints though. Someone has to occupy the mean judge niche, and she does it well. Which is why she should be heel. She fits the role well and along with Natalya, she already plays a heel on Total Divas.

#16 ·
Paige has had a rather uneventful run I'd say. She's secured herself a permanent spot alongside mainstays like the Bellas and gets to show up on Tough Enough and Total Divas, which is better than Emma's done. So she at least holds a comfortable position on the roster, but she's had no real significant impact on the division and never got super over like AJ once was. And look who they give the record breaking title reign too, not Paige but Nikki. Given the last truly great diva in that division was AJ, Paige hasn't exactly measured up. To be fair though, some of that is due to things outside of her control

Now with the next crop of NXT divas on the main roster, including a very well rounded talent in Sasha and a potential big star in Bayley if they utilize her correctly when she comes up, I see Paige becoming irrelevant sooner rather than later. She needs to find a way to stand out, like AJ did

Why do I get the feeling you followed her back to the hotel after you asked her to sign your grandfather's shit-stained underwear? I've just joined the forum and already I'm sick of your obsession with Paige's pathetic ass.
He obviously needs brain surgery to re-wire those electrical impulses when Paige enters his head. Fuck it, I'll even pay for his surgery if it means his posts improve from shit to tolerable.
Oh yeah no doubt your a "new" poster. Nothing here was even obsessive in this thread. Hell read around and there's been way more obsessive post for other wrestlers and divas than me stating a recent fact about a comic con record broken by paige. And you replying to @Dell when he was referring to rlstern is even funnier.

Paige as a talent in nxt was average-good, in the main roster she hasnt done anything that i could call interesting so OP is right IMO, she is just a popular girl, i dont follow divas a lot but if Kelly Kelly (really dunno is she ever was)was over because of the looks shall we forgot all the flaws in mic or ring?.

Right now Paige is just a hot pale diva.

It really irritates me how in-ring wise, Paige has really been 'toned down' on the main roster compared to NXT. I remember thinking that Paige vs Emma NXT Women's Title was the first Diva's match since that infamous Trish vs Lita match that I really enjoyed and considered to be (at the time) the best Divas match in WWE, on a later date I turned on Superstars and it was Paige vs Emma and the match was literally like every mediocre diva's match ever, it was just sad. Paige just isn't the same as she was on NXT and honestly her run on the roster as a whole has been outright disappointing. Paige is better then what she is doing now but whether it be WWE not letting her or she's just not being her best on her accord, it's just sad how much of a fall she's had since NXT to the main roster. Hope the same thing doesn't happen to Sasha, Charlotte, Becky or whoever else gets promoted from NXT.

Awesome thread Loved exactly everything that you have stated. I feel like the problem with The Paige deal has always been booking and presentation. How Paige has been presented has been the biggest issue of her development. She has been portrayed in so many different ways on the main roster other than what the original presentation of her has always been. That was the version of her that was in NXT that you have precisely stated:

A Badass. A plain and simple bad ass. But what we have seen from her is a:

1. Vanilla Babyface

2. Timid Schoolgirl

3. Crazy bitch.

4. Girl next door type.

Those four are not was the original intent of her persona to be. OP, i give you permission to go back through posts that i have made on this deal with Paige, i have stated that she is not meant to be a finesse person in the ring. She is not meant to be Hollywood. She is not meant to be Broadway. She was not meant to be fashion show wrestler. She was meant to be A GOOD OLD FASHIONED ASSKICKER! No nonsense, straight forward, whoop as machine. I have always compared her to the old school players the were more rough and rugged in the ring. William Regal, David Taylor, The Texas Hangmen from Puerto Rican Wrestling, Bruiser Brody, and others like them. But i have really compared her to these guys. These guys represent what i feel Paige should be. Check these guys out. They are The Road Warriors:

If you look at it from an objective standpoint, you can see the likenesses between them:

1. Look

2. Attitude

3. Mentality

4. Aggression

5. Temper

6. In ring style

I could say she is the female version of them. Were they great speakers? no. Were they great orators in wrestling? Not really. Were they direct with their intentions? Absolutely. In straight talk, did they bottom line their desire for destruction? They sure as well did. Did they go in the ring, and obliterate their opponents?

YOU CAN BET YOUR ASS THEY DID!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Paige was meant to be a Terminator in the ring. A Systematic Annihilator of the highest order. Just like The Road Warriors, but WWE for some psychotropic drug induced reason, they seem hell bent on not showcasing her in that matter. I believe that if she was showcased like that from the start then everything would be better for her.

Her showcasing and presentation has been the fault. Once they correct that, things will be better.

#36 ·
I honestly dont think she fits a terminator/badass role at all. You look back at her NXT run when she was the Anti-Diva most of her moves were generic Diva moves, and she was always showing her body off. Then on the main roster theres a constant stream of selfies, she's on Total Divas, bending over is one of her moves, etc. Theres nothing wrong with any of this, but Paige is pretty much the sterotypical Diva, she's just pale, which means nothing. Kelly Brook is pale but that doesn't make her an Anti-Model.

Uh, you don't have to? Since you were enthused enough to return though, why not post your thoughts on this juicy nugget whenever is convenient?

Paige vs Emma for the title wasn't even that good to be honest. It's not even on the same league as the women's matches that followed after she got stripped of the title.

EDIT:
Thank god for Sasha and the other NXT girls. Hopefully Kana can steal a bit more of her screen-time in the future as well.
Gosh, can anyone imagine Kana trying to work divas matches? It would be nothing short of disastrous I'd reckon. She'd be working with some women who struggle to work matches more than 10 minutes, never mind trying to pick up on Kana's broken English throughout the match. I could imagine her throwing potatoes galore when she starts getting pissed.
