I have been probing the depths of Vince's psychology to try to understand pushes and burials. And I think I understand now.
Put simply, their is a dichotomy in Vince's mind. Who he thinks will succeed, and those who succeed without him.
The first part of the dichotomy is the look. Vince thinks looks are the most important factor in getting someone over. Wrestling talent is not. And the evidence for that seems solid. After all, Andre got over, so did Hogan (despite being untalented in the ring). And the Rock and Austin. They were average wrestlers (Except Andre). All of them had distinctive looks.
Here lies the problem. Despite their looks, they had charisma. I honestly do not think Vince understands charisma. It is not mic skills, though that helps, or attractiveness, though that helps. It is someone who signifies the zeitgeist of the times.
But Vince recognizes the importance of charisma. So he will push people he thinks are attractive to the audience - without realizing why they are attractive/unattractive.
The second part of the equation, is popularity. But to Vince, this must be a long term phenomenon for him to notice. After all, he has seen many wrestlers rise and fall in popularity over the years (mainly ones he had hopes for). He is willing to push long term popular stars - even when not understanding their popularity - as any good businessman would. Except, those people may not draw. And some evidence supports that. See Bret or HBK.
But for this discussion, let us use Bryan as an example. I truly think Bryan is a symptom of the Zeitgeist of the moment. As a lot of people feel, an underdog facing the authority (or them, facing corporations). A lot of his popularity stems from there. But he has mad skills to supplement that perception - after all, who has not thought they are better than their boss. And being high on the corporate ladder I can see their point. If talent don't get you there, throwing people under the bus will (thankfully most people do not do that).
And how long was Bryan in the WWE for Vince to accept him as top dog? Did Vince use his first perception to hire Batistsa? Or Brock....
Put simply, Vince thinks a certain person is the look, because his secondary ideals have not kicked in.
Or in other terms. Vince does not understand charisma, and confuses it for a look.
Your thoughts? And do not just say Vince is delusional, or sucks. Explain why you think that.
