By the way, don't use AirTran or Spirit. They are the Greyhound (bus line) of the sky. Prices are generally lower then others, but they charge you for everything. Southwest air would be a great option since they have lower fairs then most and don't charge for bags or carry ons. If money or time isn't a object, booking a Train to New Orleans is a great option.

I've got a couple of great deals with AirTran before, even with luggage fees. Basically with flights, go wherever the best deal is, and it could come from anywhere - it pays to cast the net wide.

Southwest owns Airtran, you could very well book on Southwest.com and get stuck on an Airtran flight.

I wouldn't rule out anything even with airtran bag fees a flight on them will still likely be cheaper than a flight on 95% of the other airlines. Have never flown Spirit so I can't comment on them.

Added a map with the rumoured hotel locations. Everything is pretty close together - all walkable (though there's streetcars & buses for the lazy )

Having not flown internally in USA for a while can someone clarify, is there usually a baggage allowance when flying or is it just hand luggage? I think we will be booking with Southwest as they offered the best deals

Ha, you're welcome I work online "full time", so I'm pretty much always at my PC, doing research - hence the absurd amount of time I have to devote to stuff like this.

Lemme know if you've got suggestions, ideas, critiques, pineapples, or a sweet chicken dance.

Southwest usually include the baggage allowance, others charge extra, but you can sometimes score a cheap flight that is still cheaper despite charging for baggage. But if Southwest is the best deal, go for it. I always seem to fly with them, and I don't have any complaints.

Southwest has been and will always be my.favorite while traveling. First 2 checked bags are free. With their prices for flights, can't beat it. I always do the Just Get Away fairs and have yet had a problem with them
