I prefer chain wrestling, lucha and in particular English style wrestling myself but there is nothing inherently flawed with WWE's model. Look at Punk Vs Taker for an example of the same style done right. Dean Ambrose is another oldschool minded guy coming up who uses the same style, he'll thrive in WWE with his moveset. Shawn Michaels could wrestle Catch-as-Catch-Can if he wanted to but also use safestyle when he wanted. Its all about the ability to pace a match and tell a story that makes sense. Some guys got it, others don't.
oh, I agree that the style can be effective - as you point out Taker / Punk. I just think there is a tendency to go overboard today - especially when someone like Bryan has to resort to mainly kicks and punches.

or the overt way in the Cena / Rock match - I might not recall correctly - but except for a ddt, missed top rope leg drop and maybe one or 2 more moves - there was nothing else but punches, kicks, signatures, finishers and multiple finisher kick-outs.

a perfect example on how not to do it in a 20+ minute match

It's a shame, because it ruins the match.

I stopped watching TNA because they did the same thing in a Jeff Hardy/Kurt Angle match where they both hit a load of finishers and then it ended with Hardy in the ankle lock for about 5 minutes without tapping out. It made both of them look awful.
Angle has been doing that style for 10 years with everyone from Bob Holly to the Undertaker lol. The problem with most of todays workers is they have no idea how to "work". When to take a crowd up when to bring them down when to give your opponent a hope spot, how to properly work a begining middle and end of a match etc.

I don't have a problem with any style if the workers know how to work a crowd and are properly selling whats going on in the ring. Even that great Cena/Punk match from Raw a few weeks ago had some dreadful selling from Cena running around like Roderick Strong on crack towards the end of the match.

Maybe a D Bry singles push can save WWE main events, but I'm not holding my breath.

Re: Kicking out of guys finisher 100 times

Kicking out of finishers at WM was cool, like 5 years ago. Now, it's overdone like crazy. Same as nearfalls. Rock/Cena obviously overdid it big time. Wasn't even a fan of Punk/Taker using it that much. They didn't need it and because the match was rather short for a WM match (20 minutes), it felt like they crammed it all in, in such a short amount of time. Still a good match, but the kicking out of finishers and nearfalls in general are overdone today. Plus, some of the nearfalls last night, they kicked out like right at 2, instead of closer to 3. Wasn't a fan of that in those matches. It's become overkill.

Exactly this. I said as much in the thread during the match, at some points even The Rock was guilty of it but Cena last night, and not just last night actually but nearly every "big" match, he just cannot make anything look dramatic. He powers out at two like he'd been suplexed and nothing else. Fucking pisses me off.

It's the worst when they don't even bother to do transitions, just rest, finisher, can't believe it look then lie down for 20secs, repeat. There's no tension at all, even when Rock did a DDT it just returned back to the same pattern. It's the perfect time to bring out a new move to change it up.

It's the right word. Jerkass.

Exactly, it works well when few and far between, with a little variety before each finisher. Kicking out of 10 straight finishers is not good to look at.

Re: Kicking out of guys finisher 100 times

I agree with what most people have said but it only happens during main events to show how much will each guy has to win. Also to the OP, I'm pretty sure the bookers have no control over how finishers are used, that was Vince, Rock, Cena, and the agents doing not the writers.

Same thing with Rock/Austin at WM 19, but that was more entertaining.

I love the way that match ended, almost like it took 3 Rock Bottoms to defeat the rattlesnake. But the way he did the last one, Austin was basically out of it and Rock just held him there like he knew he was about to end his career.

I mean seriously, the WM15, 17 matches are great. The whole trilogy is, but WM19, especially the way Austin ended up retiring ... that ending.

Man!
