Default Who has had the best matches at Wrestlemania?

In terms of match-quality, who has had the best matches?

I pick the Macho Man Randy Savage.
  • Wrestlemania 3 vs Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat
  • Wrestlemania 5 vs Hulk Hogan
  • Wrestlemania 7 vs Ultimate Warrior (Warrior's best match)
  • Wrestlemania 8 vs Ric Flair

He's had a lot of big matches, but in terms of quality I don't think he passed Savage.

I'll go through some of his big name matches:

  • vs Bret at 'Mania 12: 60 minutes of wrestling without a near fall.
  • vs Austin at 'Mania 14: A big, important match that solidified Austin. But it was not a good match.
  • vs Jericho at 'Mania 19: This was okay, though a few minutes too long.
  • vs HHH vs Benoit at 'Mania 20: Good.
  • vs Angle at 'Mania 21: Here, this begins my biggest knock on HBK's 'Mania matches. Too many near falls. We didn't need to see him kick out of a top-rope Angle Slam. We didn't need to see him stay in the Ankle Lock for 10 minutes. That's excessive. It's cheap. A great match doesn't rely on Signature move after Signature move after Signature move.
  • vs Vince at 'Mania 22: About 8 years too late. We had already seen Vince fight with so many wrestlers that this felt like a rehash. It was like an inferior, outdated re-do of Hogan vs Vince at 'Mania XIX.
  • vs Cena at 'Mania 23: Too much like a RAW main-event rather than a Wrestlemania match.
  • vs Flair at 'Mania 24: Same as above. People rate this highly because of the sentimentality involving Flair's retiring.
  • vs Undertaker at 'Mania 25: Same as Angle 21'. It was an overeliance on signature moves. Undertaker kicks out of Sweet Chin Music. Then Shawn Michaels kicks out of the Chokeslam. Undertaker kicks out of another Sweet Chin Music. Shawn Michaels kicks out of Last Ride. Undertaker kicks out of next Sweet Chin. Shawn Michaels kicks out of Tombstone, etc. It's cheap.
  • vs Undertaker at 'Mania 26: Same story as above.

His match with HHH and BEnoit was a classic and the best Triple Threat match in history. And his match with Taker from WM 25 was one of the best matches in the WWE history again. And yeah, I agree that his last match was nothing special

Shawn Michaels, they don't call him Mr. Wrestlemania for nothing. His match is always stealing the show, and he doesn't need to be in the title picture to do so.

Wrestlemania 14 - Shawn Michaels vs. Stone Cold Steve Austin - Main Event and best show of the night.

Wrestlemania 19 - Shawn Michaels vs. Chris Jericho - The best match of the night, by far. Instant classic.

Wrestlemania XX - Chris Benoit vs. Triple H vs. Shawn Michaels - In the main event, but classic match.

Wrestlemania 21 - Kurt Angle vs. Shawn Michaels - Longest match of the night, arguably the best also.

Wrestlemania 22 - Vince McMahon vs. Shawn Michaels - The elbowdrop off the ladder is still recognized today, amazing match.

Wrestlemania 23 - John Cena vs. Shawn Michaels - WWE Championship - Was for the title, but still greatest show of the night barely in front of Batista/Undertaker.

Wrestlemania 24 - Ric Flair vs. Shawn Michaels - Match of the Year 2008

Wrestlemania 25 - The Undertaker vs. Shawn Michaels - Match of the year 2009

Wrestlemania 26 - The Undertaker vs. Shawn Michaels - Main event of the evening, the match people remember from that night.

PLUS there's the fact that he lost most of these matches and they still say that HE, Shawn Michaels, put on the best show of the night, they call him Mr. Wrestlemania, he's lost more than the majority of his Wrestlemania Matches but is still recognized as the one to put on the best show. I'd like someone to argue with me about this, there is not a question in the world it is someone else.

It's safe to say that's HBK's style, but some of those you have mentioned were still considered as epic matches.

I think you have to consider Bret too:

WMVIII vs Piper
WMX vs Owen
WMXII vs Shawn
WMXIII vs Stone Cold.

All four could be contenders in top 20 Mania matches of all time.
