- WWE officials have broached the possibility of an Alberto Del Rio vs. Dolph Ziggler match at WrestleMania 29, according to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter. However, it was noted that the match may not necessarily be for the World Heavyweight Championship currently held by Del Rio.
Del Rio vs Ziggler at WrestleMania 29?
The Wrestling Observer is reporting that WWE officials have discussed the idea of Alberto Del Rio vs Dolph Ziggler at WrestleMania 29. The report noted, however, that the match won't necessarily be for the World Heavyweight Title currently held by Del Rio, making it possible for an earlier rumored match between Randy Orton and Sheamus for the title still a possibility.
- It appears the rumored Dolph Ziggler babyface turn won't be happening. WWE officials recently discussed having Ziggler vs. Alberto Del Rio for the World Heavyweight Title at WrestleMania 29, with Dolph winning. No word yet how this scenario would tie in with Ziggler's Money in the Bank briefcase but he is a candidate to win the 30-man Royal Rumble match on Sunday.
Plans do change ask any ex-Creative team member about Vince's decision making.
I know they do. It's just they are presenting these reports as if they arte some hot insider info when it is mostly speculation that is far off the mark. Last January they reported with certainty that the Mania 28 main events were going to be Punk/HHH and Taker/Jericho even though it was clear as day since the night after WM27 it would be Taker/HHH again. This year it appears Del Rio is getting a run out of nowhere. But definitely, plans can change.
WWE wrestler Dolph Ziggler seems to be stuck right now. Fresh off a main event TV run with John Cena - which is a major career advancement for Ziggler working with WWE's top star - Ziggler holds the World Title Money in the Bank briefcase, but it does not make sense for him to cash in right now.
WWE is currently trying to make World Hvt. champion Alberto Del Rio a new top star. Pulling the rug out from under Del Rio as quickly as they put the World Title on him would be very short-sighted.
One option is holding off on Del Rio vs. Ziggler until WrestleMania, which the Wrestling Observer reported this week is being talked about within WWE. However, WWE would run the risk of a "bizzaro world" reaction where Ziggler gets cheered and Del Rio has a less-than-favorable reaction because Alberto does not have a strong connection with hardcore fans who would make up the Mania audience.
If Mania is the place to turn stars into Superstars and make big stars even bigger, WWE would run the risk of dousing water on Del Rio. But, on the flip side, it could put Ziggler over the top following his program with Cena.
Also of note concerning Ziggler seemingly being stuck is that Ric Flair was reportedly going to bless Ziggler with the figure-four leglock before it was given to The Miz. According to the Wrestling Observer, it likely would have led to Ziggler turning face via association with Flair.
However, with Ziggler just starting a heel association with A.J. Lee and Big E. Langston, who is potentially the next big monster for Cena to conquer, the timing was off. It's more likely now that Ziggler will turn face at or after WrestleMania depending on where he ends up on the card, how the next two months of TV pan out, and whether he cashes in MITB before Mania.
As is usually the case with WWE, plans change, the WrestleMania line-up continues to change, and Ziggler's MITB briefcase could continue to sit idly until WWE decides the length of Del Rio's first World Title reign.
