Divas Champion Eve vs. Kaitlyn
Though her quest to become WWE Divas Champion has been fraught with setbacks, the persistent Kaitlyn has powered her way back into contention and will face Eve for the butterfly-emblazoned title live on pay-per-view at Survivor Series this Sunday.
On the Nov. 12 edition of Raw, the Divas division’s resident powerhouse shockingly upset former champion Layla to become the No. 1 contender to Eve’s championship. With the victory over her close friend, The Hybrid Diva earned herself another crack at the title she has relentlessly chased since late summer.
The WWE Universe undoubtedly remembers the awe plastered across everyone’s face when Kaitlyn outlasted a ring full of Divas, including Eve, in an Aug. 20 Battle Royal on Raw to become the top contender to then-champion Layla. (WATCH) Kaitlyn’s title opportunity scheduled for Night of Champions, however, was derailed when a mystery attacker with blond hair laid out the NXT season three winner backstage, injuring her leg.
In a fortuitous (or convenient, depending on your perspective) twist of fate, Eve swooped in to take Kaitlyn’s place against Layla, and at Night of Champions, the jiu-jitsu expert unseated Layla to capture her third Divas Title.
The subsequent controversy surrounding Kaitlyn and her anonymous attacker became a focal point for not only WWE’s other Divas, but also the administration of SmackDown General Manager Booker T, whose assistant, Eve, was heavily suspected to be involved in Kaitlyn’s takedown. Though Aksana was loosely implicated as Kaitlyn’s wig-wearing attacker, the cold, hard facts of the case are still tough to come by.
Despite repeat assurances that she played no part in the backstage assault, Eve has not exactly been cleared of wrongdoing in the matter, and the tension between she and Kaitlyn has grown ever since.
Fast forward to WWE Hell in a Cell, the scene of a Triple Threat Divas Title Match between Eve, Layla and Kaitlyn. Freshly healed from her leg injury, Kaitlyn put on a heroic performance and delivered more than a couple impressive feats of strength en route to a devastating loss: Eve retained the title by ousting Kaitlyn from the ring and pinning Layla.
Even without losing the deciding fall, Kaitlyn’s rapid rise in the Divas division seemingly hit a roadblock.
Though that might be enough to deter some competitors, Kaitlyn, true to character, persevered. Intent on making her presence known in the Divas division, she paired with Layla to defeat Eve and Aksana on the Nov. 5 edition of Raw, which led to the No. 1 contender singles bout between her and Layla on Nov. 12.
With several big-time wins in her back pocket, pent-up frustration directed at Eve and a burning desire to get her first taste of WWE championship gold, Kaitlyn is homing in on Survivor Series this Sunday. Will the cunning Eve, who always appears one step ahead of her competition, be ready for a more determined, and possibly more dangerous, Kaitlyn? Or perhaps more to the point, is Kaitlyn ready to finally seize her moment, now that she’s fought her way back to the title scene? The entire Divas division will be watching closely this Sunday, when Survivor Series airs live on pay-per-view at 8 ET/5 PT. (HOW TO WATCH)
