Did Rock Vs. Cena surpass Rock Vs. Hogan?

For the most part, I would say yes. Once In A Lifetime had more time (a year's worth of build-up), social media to work with, a bigger buyrate for its WM, and has its own DVD/BR feature.

As for the match itself being better than Icon Vs. Icon, I'll leave that to you guys to debate on.

Maybe due to Rock's current mainstream appeal, it's possible in the world outside of wrestling. I'm not sure though. But in the wrestling world? Not even close.

I'm watching you...

Re: Did Rock Vs. Cena surpass Rock Vs. Hogan?

Fuck no.

Rock/Cena was more promoted and that makes it hard to compare the two matches right off the bat because there's so many variables that effect the numbers and promotion going into the match. Why should we penalize Rock/Hogan just because social media wasn't as much of a phenomenon 10 years ago as it as now or the fact that they didn't receive an year long build. You aren't operating on even terms in that case.

Despite all that, Rock/Hogan had a bigger buyrate BTW. They didn't keep worldwide numbers back then so WM 18 doing 840K domestic is much more impressive and I'm nearly 100% sure it's greater than the domestic number for WM 28 (can't remember the exact number but around 700K if I'm not mistaken).

As for the match, Rock/Hogan is better by a laughably large margin. Much better pacing, much better structure, greater atmosphere and less wasted motion. That match is GOAT strictly basing it on the spectacle (obviously not overall).

Re: Did Rock Vs. Cena surpass Rock Vs. Hogan?

As far as the match itself goes, no. Rock Vs. Hogan was one of my hardest mark out moments ever. I still get chills when I watch it. That match took me back to my childhood while also putting together my favorite of that era and my favorite as a kid together in the ring at the same time. It was just magical to me.

Rock Vs. Cena felt like they were trying to recreate that and it didn't fully work. I also felt like the match ran about 10 minutes too long and both guys got gassed, and it didn't quite have the raw passion from the crowd that Hogan/Rock did. I marked for Rock going over, and it was a good match for the most part, but I wasn't blown away by it.

Re: Did Rock Vs. Cena surpass Rock Vs. Hogan?

Not for me.

- The match itself dragged a lot and should probably have been about 10 minutes shorter. The atmosphere/crowd is pretty much what makes these kind of matches and I think it was hindered by two things, first of all being that the match dragged as I said and secondly the open stadium, I think had it been in a closed arena it would obviously have been a lot better and added more to the match.

- The five or six week build up was horrible and I hated pretty much everything about it except for a few things.

- And obviously I'm biased here but I just don't see Cena as the same huge icon/star that Rock and Hogan were. I don't think he has the same level of charisma that those two had so it was probably never going to exceed WM18 for me.

Although aside from all those things I have to say I marked harder for Rock beating Cena than I did for him beating Hogan, probably because I absolutely didn't expect it and was sure Cena was winning

Re: Did Rock Vs. Cena surpass Rock Vs. Hogan?

Absolutely not and I was never a fan of Hulk Hogan.
Hogan vs Rock was a match that I couldn't miss with two generations coming together.
Rock vs Cena was a match that was going on in the background while I was baking cookies.

WrestleMania's of the past were also shows that you couldn't miss and had an atmosphere about them which guaranteed a moment. WrestleMania's of today are simply 4 hour shows in super domes with a chance of seeing something that feels like a Mania moment.

Fucking bitches. Getting money.

I was at WM28 and I liked a lot Rock vs Cena, but I don't think it's even close to Hogan vs Rock for a simple reason:

Hogan >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Cena

Re: Did Rock Vs. Cena surpass Rock Vs. Hogan?

Not at all. Rock vs Hogan for me was something that I had to watch live. It was truly magical from start to finish. I actually cared about the full match and the crowd was one of the best I've ever heard for a match. With Rock vs Cena, I didn't give two shits about the match. I just wanted to see how it would end.
