Default Is WrestleMania possibly the most underwhelming PPV of the year

Maybe I just have high expectation about this but I think Wrestlmania is probably the most underwhelming ppv of the year. It's the biggest PPV of the year, the granddaddy of them all and understandably there is a lot of high expectations and emphasis on the ppv. But, I feel Wrestlmania is a usually a hit and miss as far as booking and quality go. Take Wrestlmania 27 for instance. You had a dreadful main event, a lot of the feuds going into the PPV from what I can remember were lackluster. I think the only ones that I had a lot of high hope for were Undertaker/HHH and CM Punk/Randy Orton, and those were the only two matches on that ppv that I really enjoyed. I certainly wasn't compelled to buy the ppv when it came out on DVD. Wrestlmania 28 was pretty much the same I felt too. Rock/Cena was pretty average if not below average. Punk/Jericho I think could have been better, you also had Bryan losing in 18 seconds, which I guess was a good thing ultimately since it gave birth to his character, but the match sucked anyway. The only noteworthy match for me again was Undertaker/Triple H HIAC. It's not just recent Wrestlmanias that i'm talking about either. Wrestlmaina 2000 to me was pretty underwhelming too, the main event was alright but I've always maintained it should have been Rock Vs Triple H instead of the fatal fourway, and apart from the triangle ladder match which stole the show there wasn't anything memorable about the ppv. There are other Wrestlmainas in the 20's and 90's that were underwhelming too but i'll move on.

Getting back on topic, I feel Wrestlmania as big as it is, is probably the most under whelming ppv. I mean when you consider ppvs like Royal Rumble for instance which is my favorite ppv of the year. You have a really exciting and hyped up ppv, because it's that time of the year where you're hoping and praying your favorite wins the Rumble, or wondering who will win the Rumble. The matches themselves tend to be quite alright, (except for this year's Royal Rumble), and overall it's just a fun ppv to watch because it's all about the battle royal really. I feel Mania fails because there is too much over planning and stress involved. They want to put out the best show that year, but I think it's constantly edited and watered down and just ends up being a big clusterfuck. That's my opinion on what happened with Mania 27 anyway.

Absolutely. I said it a few days ago, but WrestleMania pretty much sucks every year. Some of the best matches ever ARE WrestleMania matches, and I'm not trying to downgrade that, but the problem with WrestleMania is that it's any other PPV, only overproduced and extra long. Regardless of how much hype and build you put into it, the performers are the same. They don't just magically become better performers at WrestleMania and then revert back to their normal selves when it's over. They try so hard to FORCE everything to be great but you can't FORCE great matches, they have to be organic and WrestleMania usually isn't.

WrestleMania this year was probably the worst PPV of the year, or at least close to it. Maybe No Way Out, but everything but the HIAC sucked. Rock vs Cena was the worst really huge match in ages. Terrible, just atrocious wrestling. Ironically enough, the best PPV of the year is usually Extreme Rules (and in 2012, this is indisputable), the PPV after, when it's just WM rematches but with weapons and when they aren't under so much fucking stress.

What was the reason that the people were supposed to get behind him, other than the company just saying "phht, well, he's...in school".

The problem is they start new feuds heading into Mania instead of just building a feud toward Mania. Imagine that at 27 they would've kept Cena fired and then had him come back and face Barrett at Mania OR Barrett face Taker instead of Trips because... They stared down a few times. Ooooooh.

Good post and yes I agree it can be underwhelming, I liked Wrestlemania 28 but it wasn't as good as the ppv that followed it in Extreme Rules, going back mania 27 was a pretty bad show, 25 and 26 were decent but is that enough?, part of the problem is the booking with them trying to fit too much in and end up screwing things up(giving Rey-Punk only 7 minutes, Bryan losing In 18 seconds)

Personally I thought Wrestlemania 28 was the best PPV of the year so far

Rock VS Cena was a good match, was very fun and unpredictable

Jericho VS Punk was good as well (match had one of the best counters I've ever seen) only problem it had was that it was obvious Jericho wasnt going to win

And of course HHH VS Undertaker was amazing, I loved that match

The fundamental problem is lack of *made* stars and compelling storylines/rivalries leading to the event in recent times, which is why we fans dont have that emotional connection with the characters, matches and it ends up having that largely under-whelming feel because the mega-stars that you care about are feuding with each other giving you that one or two great matches and the rest are just simply there every year. This is why top stars should work with young up-and-comers and give 'em the rub. At the end of the day though, its promoted as a spectacle meant to draw big money, making millions, profits and a short time mainstream publicity for the company.

Mania is more about the spectacle than anything else. As Pyro said, some of the best matches of all time have taken place at Mania, but you get lots of filler that you normally wouldn't have to endure during your run-of-the-mill B-show PPV. WM is Vince's way of tooting his own horn by producing a media-conscious entertainment juggernaut. That said, if you're looking for nonstop wrestling clinics, it's probably not the show for you. However, if you're looking for some "once in a lifetime" marquee matchups and a couple of easter egg show stealers amidst celebrity guest appearances and over the top theatrics, Mania is the best show of the year.

Yeah it was a very underwhelming ppv this year

Rock vs Cena under delivered in every possible way
Punk vs Jerico was a good match from what i remember but no where nearly as good as they could both have done
Team Teddy vs Team Johnny was horrible
Undertaker vs Triple H match of the night great story telling from start to finnish
Woman's tag match was horrible but i knew it would be
Big show vs Cody was horrible
Kane vs Orton was Horrible
Bryan vs Sheamus, thought it was horrible booking at the time but looking back it made Bryan.

One of the worse Wm's of all time.

Iv felt the same way about many WM's the last few years they dont live up to what i thought they would be, you think every year this WM's will be the one that out does last years and every year it doesn't live up to the hype.

To many filler matches with no point to them and little stories be hide them, WM has be a 3 match card for a few years now.

We have no mid card... we have no tag teams... we have no women's division... we have no build up that takes months. The road to wrestlemania is so rushed now, and interrupted by a pointless PPV (love the gimmick hate the tiiming), that the sense of building to something huge just doesn't exist. It's manufactured hype and it fails to capture the essence of past great WM's. It's been this way for a long time though. The closest they have come is the HBK/Taker build. It felt natural, it felt huge, and it had that "This... is Wrestlemania" feel. You just don't get that much anymore.

This. X1000

There's no big WM payoff which hurts it.
