WWE Tag Team Champions R-Truth & Kofi Kingston vs. Kane & Daniel Bryan

Thanks to an unforeseen turn of events on Raw, the strange-but-true duo of Kane & Daniel Bryan has supplanted The Prime Time Players as No. 1 contenders to WWE Tag Team Champions Kofi Kingston & R-Truth. WWE’s most explosive “odd couple” will test out their tenuous pairing against the reigning champions this Sunday at Night of Champions.

Kane and Bryan scored the all-important opportunity by overcoming Titus O’Neil & Darren Young on Raw Monday night. Prior to the contest, Raw General Manager AJ Lee had announced that The Prime Time Players, who were awarded No. 1 contender status days earlier on SmackDown (WATCH), still had one team to beat before they could move on to the champions. Unfortunately for the swaggering Players, the remaining obstacle was the unlikely but effective tandem of The Big Red Monster and WWE’s premier submission specialist.

Originally conceptualized by Dr. Shelby, the team of Kane and Bryan showed barely a glimpse of continuity in their win over O'Neil & Young. In fact, the winning pinfall came after Kane — upset that Bryan had tagged himself in — Chokeslammed Bryan onto Young.

Unthinkable as it may seem, the former nemeses will now have to rely on each other if they plan to leave Boston with championship gold this Sunday. Will the unusual team prove to be the toughest challenge yet to Kingston and Truth’s championship reign, which is now in its fifth month?

On one hand, the uneasy alliance seems like a perfect recipe for success. Former World Champions Kane and Bryan are considered two of WWE’s best singles competitors, and history strongly suggests that many singles competitors have transitioned successfully into WWE’s tag team division.

Yet, there is no denying that Kane and Bryan still appear less-than-comfortable — and more-than-combustible — working as a unit. Though their shared experience in an anger management course brought the two Superstars closer together than ever before, their RAWActive “Hug It Out” Match on the Sept. 3 Raw did not end cordially. With the WWE Tag Team Titles hanging in the balance, can Kane and Bryan put their differences aside, or is this pairing simply too flammable to succeed?

Even if Kane and Bryan are able to get on the same page, their team may still be fatally hindered by each Superstar’s individual hostility. Dr. Shelby’s efforts to curb their anger problems have shown signs of moderate progress, but the WWE Universe would be hard-pressed to describe either Kane or Bryan as “rage-free.” (In fact, Bryan’s anger toward the “Yes!”-chanting crowd in Milwaukee, Wis., on Raw three weeks ago caused him to lose his temper and lose via count-out to R-Truth.)

That could spell trouble for the challengers, as standing across the ring from them this Sunday will be the well-oiled machine known as the WWE Tag Team Champions. Kofi Kingston & R-Truth have stood atop WWE’s crowded tag team division for nearly half a year, and over the course of their reign, they’ve turned back one team after another. Cohesive and fun-loving, Kingston and Truth are polar opposites of Kane and Bryan, and there seems to be little reason to think they will change their strategy at Night of Champions.

Who will leave Night of Champions with the WWE Tag Team Titles? Will Truth & Kingston add yet another high-profile victory to their already long list of beaten challengers? Or will Kane and Bryan shock the WWE Universe — and maybe even each other — by forging a successful unit? Find out this Sunday at Night of Champions. (HOW TO WATCH)

So how's that feud with John Cena since Summerslam, WWE title reign, and top heel run going for Bryan these days? Oh wait, instead he's a joke character tapping to the real stars. I'm sure he's enjoying that greatly reduced salary bracket. Hey, a tag belt for him to further play Santino to Kane's Koslov and be the guy who eats all the pins and losses in the tag matches. Kurt Angle is laughing at the comparisons and the much bigger bank account.

Yeah, I've pretty much resigned to the fact that Bryan will have a JTTS/midcard career, I just enjoy whatever he does with a sad smile.

At lest over the last few months he's gotten a legion of die hard fans, prior to WM I didn't really give a fuck about him. Now...let's just say that I'm as big a mark as mark can be.

Whatever he does, whomever he jobs to, he will be remembered by tons of real fans.

Daniel Bryan is a good talent, he gets through almost everything WWE throws at him and makes it work. He is one of the most versatile workers in the company. He will be back in the spotlight when hes needed, hes done it before and actually made people care. Plus his matches for the WWE title and World title have been some of the best for this year and definitely main event caliber.

Kofi is one of the biggest and only faces in the company. If you read house show reports you will know he gets big and genuine reactions from the crowd.

He's one of the best in ring performers and puts up highlight reels on a consistent basis. Damn some of you love hating on him.

I hope R-Truth and Kofi lose this so both of them can go on to better things. They helped out the Tag Division when it was in a tough spot now they need to be moving up the ladder. Both have their own strengths and the potential to light up the upper midcard.

Since both teams are expected to receive a face reaction, I think that it is pretty safe to say that Team Friendship is winning this one.

On one hand, T. Friendship gets so much TV time, while R-Boom still does... Not so much, unfortunately for Kofi and Truth. I wish both of them were used in a better fashion, but the truth is that their tag title run has been quite bad.

I have the perfect idea. Bryan/Kane win the itles, and Rey Mysterio goes on to win the IC Title. Kofi turns heel and we get to see a good Kofi vs Rey feud.

Oh and Kofi would perfectly as a heel IMO, just looking at him when he's on one of his 'angry' days, i know he'll make a much better heel then R-Truth.

I'm going with the team of Kane and Daniel Bryan on this one I'm pretty sure they're going to win the titles.I will say I could still see Kane And Daniel Bryan not getting along thus costing them the match and Kofi and R-truth retain in the process. That would be a huge victory for Kofi and Truth and would put them over as a strong team.

I actually go into more detail on my prediction for this tag team match in this simulation vid I uploaded a few minutes ago

I wonder if the PTP will interfere.

Anyways as long as the end game is Tag Team Division becoming relevant again (Usos, Ascension, Kidd/Gabriel, Cara/Mysterio, Kane/Bryan, Primo/Epico, & PTP all getting involved) its great.

- The man who has been playing Dr. Shelby on WWE TV is actor Sam Huntington. Huntington has appeared on Law & Order, CSI: NY, CSI: Miami and Superman Returns, among others, in the past. WWE officials have been very pleased with his performances and there was talk of having him manage Kane and Daniel Bryan at tonight's Night of Champions pay-per-view.
