Rock's promo before the match was a classic, old school babyface promo. Passionate and intense like only Rock can. The entire story of this feud was Rock standing as a reliable figure for the people while Punk was the delusional villain saying how they don't matter(Not comparable to anything Cena said out of the blue to get the sympathy reaction in any way). Everything Rock said was in context, the adversity part with a man working all his life only to get fired, the fact that he had just $7 in his pocket one time and of course his mother's cancer, which he delivered immensely. His facial expression the moment he said that was amazing because you could feel how strong it was for him. There wasn't a reason or secret plan behind it, the crowd was pro-Rock all the way, it was just The Rock, The People's Champ giving the people something to relate to because everything that happened to them, happened to him at some point of his life and he still became who he is today. Pretty simple storytelling.

More like getting more sympathy from the crowd. Nothing says desperate like using your mothers illness to sway a mixed crowd.

More like cutting a great babyface promo in the context of the feud. The crowd was already on his side. That was a promo to signify the fact that Rock was in the same position as every guy in the arena at some point of his life. If it's getting fired, having financial problems or dealing with personal family issues. He gave 3 real life examples of himself as a way to say "We've all been there". Like I said, classic old school babyface promo.

Is their a Rock segment/promo/match ever that you wouldn't consider "classic" or "money"?

Rock got gassed just giving that promo.

And you're right, Rock316AE. It was old school. Dusty Rhodes old school....as in, he ripped off the Hard Times Promo almost word for word. Yeah, great promo. Dusty did it better.

I think the crowd being mixed at RR had more to do with ppv crowds usually being full of diehard fans who absolutely adore Punk.
Go on any Rock video and youll see a legion of peeps who use to like him but now dont due to his association with movies and only coming back for months at a time. To claim hes anywhere near his peak in popularity is just silly cuz hes obviously not even close. Sure hes still bigger than the peeps on the roster but thats cuz talent has sufficiently went downhill in a big way. Like I said most of the Punk supporters at Rumble just didnt like a part timer winning the title off a full time guy, nothing more.

Rocky history proves he never cared much if he got booed. Dont babyfaces by definition do things to get sympathy from the crowd? I feel like to many peeps are reaching when coming up with things to dislike about Rocky these days. I bet if he went back to the old Rocky like everyone claims they want then peeps would complain that he hasnt changed HAHA you guys crack me up.
