Re: Official The Rock vs. CM Punk Discussion Thread
I'm going to go ahead and write a detailed analysis of my views on the promo and feud so far since a couple of unstoppable morons seem to already be twisting my words on the subject.
Rock
Let me start this by saying Rock's execution was poor here. Poor in the sense of what? In the sense that I feel he wasn't as focused as he could have been. Some of the jokes here (cookiepuss? strip in the mirror?) were absolutely cringe-worthy and derailed some very good points he was making. No argument there.
With that said, Rock's half of the promo here absolutely served it's purpose. Absolutely served it's purpose. We'll be repeating and bolding things a couple of times here so that some of these geniuses can let some points sink in. He and Punk sold the PPV here better than we've seen in a long time. In addition to that, Rock made it clear that Punk was A) highly dangerous, B) in the way of him achieving his goal (WWE Title) and C) a threat the likes of which he has not faced before. The whole point of Rock feuding with Punk was established through this promo. Sell the PPV. Establish a rivalry/feud. Put Punk on par with a legend and put him over as a dangerous opponent. The problem wasn't in what Rock said to Punk but how he executed it. Less corny shit and more facts would have been helpful here.
Punk
Punk was on his A game here. He is the reigning champion, it's his turf to defend and he defended it. He's been consistently on the rise since Vegas, building up ammunition for this promo and he unleashed it here. He opened the promo with a pipebomb segment and aired out his grievances once again. Rock came out and Punk consistently went harder as the promo went on, comfortably going toe to toe with an icon of the previous generation. The problem with Punk's execution here was the pace of his promo in the first half. He spent a little bit too much time badgering the crowd instead of getting his initial message across IMO. Let's go ahead and bold in my opinion here to let it sink in once again. Everyone is going to have their own perceptions of this promo. This is just mine.
The fans won from this promo in several aspects.
The chemistry between the two was undeniable. Much better than Rock & Cena. The feud had a more serious tone than what we're used to throughout the year. Rock reiterated that Punk disrespected him back on Raw 1000 and he would make him pay the price. Punk let Rock know that he wasn't going to stop his reign as WWE champion and that he would kick his ass every time that he stepped to him. Mission accomplished. Did they sell the PPV? Yeah. Did they fuel the rivalry? Yeah. Did they establish this feud and put asses in those seats for weeks to come? Yes.
I don't understand all the garbage posted by some of the smarks on here. Is it that real to you that you need to pick sides and flame the opposing opinion like we're in middle school? Why can't you morons just sit back and enjoy this feud for what it is? I will never understand that. No wonder the fans that truly enjoy this are the ones that stay away from the internet.
