PS: I love how people say that Punk is beneath the streak when he's 10x better in the ring than Batista, and he's far superior to the vastly overrated Edge IMO. Hell, you can even argue he's better in the ring now than Trips was at XXVII and XXVIII. WWE has put a TON of faith in Punk over the last year or so as the Savage to Cena's Hogan, so why not Punk ?
I think it's more of a credibility thing. If Taker/Punk happened before all the HBK and HHH matches (specifically the HHH matches) then it would be more accepted, but no one would expect Punk to be a kayfabe challenge to the streak like HHH unless they played up the idea of Taker being weakened year by year. Of course he came back kayfabe stronger at WM28, going from getting dismantled by HHH the year prior to dismantling the game himself. So if he doesn't come back and compete before WM a few times, I can't see how they'll logically play that angle off... then again in WWE, logic is sometimes fucked.
So yeah, it's not really a question of whether Punk has better in ring skills than past opponents, because I'd say he's right now 10x better than HHH (from 02-now), Edge, and Batista combined. He's arguably WOTY and has had arguably 2-3 classics this year alone (Punk/Jericho matches and Punk/Bryan OTL), not to mention a bunch of other awesome matches and being consistently in MOTN at most of the PPVs this year. It's just no one could see him being a threat to the streak because not only with what Taker has gone through the last 4 years, but also the booking of Punk since turning heel and being a cowardly weak heel for most of it.
Plus I'm not sure Taker/Punk would be as good as the matches with Batista, Edge, and HHH anyway (well, I'm certain it would be better than the WM27 match). Taker/Punk haven't shown they have great chemistry and their PPV bouts have been lackluster... though you look at their SD match in 2010 before NOC and they may have something going with that formula.
Regardless, I think all the talk of Taker facing Punk will just be talk and nothing more. There are a number of bigger opponents for Taker to face and Punk himself from his comments at Comic-con doesn't seem interested in the streak anyway. Of course if Rock faces Cena and Lesnar faces HHH, Taker/Punk may just be put in ink for the WM card, though it would be much more beneficial for the streak match and Punk to have Taker face Lesnar and HHH to face Punk. Kinda sucks it looks like that isn't how it's going down, but then again there is still 5 months till WM, and nothing has to be set in stone for 2-3 months.
