Undertaker's Streak

So I'm starting to wonder...when do people think the WWE writers decided that the Undertaker should go undefeated at Wrestlemania? It just seems highly unlikely that they knew right from his WWF debut in 1990 that he would be something special, and that he should never be defeated at Wrestlemania. So what does everyone think? I didn't start watching wrestling until around '97, but maybe there was a match or two in the earlier 'Manias that Undertaker probably would have lost if he didn't have a Wrestlemania unbeaten streak to keep intact...

Re: Undertaker's Streak

What annoys me about the streak is whenever WWE refers to it, he's beaten '17 men in 17 matches'. No he hasn't, he's beaten 18 men because Wrestlemania 19 in 2003 had a Handicap Match pitting Taker vs A-Train and Big Show.

Anyways, they probably had the idea to have him be unbeaten for a few years at 'Mania because he was this mystical being. When the gimmick stuck, they probably decided to keep it going until it basically reached a point where the streak is legendary.

17 is actually right since he has beaten Kane, and now HBK, twice. So it's 17 men in 18 matches.

Re: Undertaker's Streak

I never noticed the streak until he fought HHH at WM17. For the first part of the streak he was pretty much unbeatable. Once he got by Kane at WM14 and then HHH he was pretty safe.

Re: Undertaker's Streak

I think they decided right at the beginning because he was so over immediately and they could see his talent immediately

as time went on, the reasons for letting it continue grew (ie no problems out of the ring, becoming the most respected veteran in the locker room, etc)

The Undertaker, then HBK, then Hogan.

Re: Undertaker's Streak

They did not notice the streak until Wrestlemania 17 against Triple H. But it was signaled by Undertaker the year after, defeating Ric Flair. He stepped over the ropes heading backstage and he signaled with his fingers that he is 10-0 at Wrestlemania.
The streak was not planned from his first Wrestlemania against Jimmy Snuka. It was just a coincidence that by Wrestlemania 17 he was 9-0. So from about Wrestlemania 21 against Randy Orton, it became more and more recognised year by year until this day.

Immortal

Re: Undertaker's Streak

I think they just realized it one day and thought "Shit, lets run with it". Honestly, they didn't mention the streak until Wrestlemania X-Seven prior to his match with Triple H & it just snowballed from there. So you had 8 wins in a row that just happened individually with no real long term planning.

Re: Undertaker's Streak

Yeah it really wasn't until probably around X-Seven that they really decided to take note of the streak and run with it...but at the same time, it's not that surprising that it came into place.

out of ALL wrestlers in the history of WWE? no one has ever had a gimmick more dominating than undertaker...so by default, he very, very rarely loses. WM being as big as it is, it's only normal that Undertaker always fought "giants" at the event, and would overcome them.

Think about Giant Gonzales, Kane, King Kong Bundy, etc...

Re: Undertaker's Streak

My friends and I are big Undertaker fans.

One of them wrote an original composition in tribute and posted it on Youtube. I hope you can take a moment to listen and let him know what you think.

I hope this doesn't violate any forum rules.

Re: Undertaker's Streak

The streak couldn't possibly have been planned from the start, at least not to the point it has come - 18 and 0.

It's simply impossible to look at a guy in this business and think to yourself "I'm going to try and have that guy go undefeated at every Wrestlemania for 2 decades". What if the guy goes to another promotion? What if he retires - either voluntarily or as a result of an injury? What if he simply decides wrestling isn't his thing a couple of years down the road?

I think it's possible that creative thought they'd push him to 5-0 due to his character, but as the years went past and Undertaker stuck around, I think they noticed just how far the streak had come and decided to push it as one of the main focuses of his matches.

Whatever the case is, this is one of the greatest long-term things WWE have ever done.
