I wasn't watching wrestling at the time that Bret/Owen took place, but I have watched it, and it's a damn good match. Angle/Rey is also a damn good match, I've watched it multiple times. I'd go with Bret/Owen, with Angle/Rey, and Bryan/Ziggler thrown in, b/c I loved it. Quite probably more than others do.

Re: Best PPV opening match ever?
I'm going to assume this is open to all WWE and WWE related properties. Won't mention puro.
One that is OFTEN overlooked is Dean Malenko vs Ultimo Dragon from Starrcade 1996. This was basically the 1 of only 2 reasons to watch the PPV (the other being Jushin Liger vs Rey Mysterio), it was a treat to see Dragon's puro and lucha combo style vs Malenko's technical style. Had the PPV ended there, it would have been a great send off, but sadly there was a Hogan/Piper main event to look forward to...
Ultimo Dragon vs Rey Mysterio from the previous month's World War 3 in 1996 was also stellar. As was Mysterio vs Psicosis from Bash at the Beach that year. And Kidman vs Mysterio vs Juventud from Starrcade 1998. AND Pillman vs Liger from Superbrawl 2.
Its so hard to think of one because WCW in particular had so many amazing opening matches because that's where they typically slotted the cruiserweights.
At the end of the day, I still think its Bret vs Owen just because of the story they built up.
