Zayn and Owens on their long and bitter history
Since day one, the careers of Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens have followed essentially the same path. Zayn and Owens ascended the ranks of independent wrestling’s ladder in step, graduating from the rough-and-tumble, if dimly lit, circuits of their native Quebec to the relatively brighter lights of international competition, before rising all the way to NXT and, finally, WWE.

In times of peace, Zayn and Owens’ journeys, supported by their close, mutual friendship, ran parallel. However, when their journeys intersect — as they will at WWE Payback — the result is always the same: pure, unadulterated carnage.

Operating under the unofficial motto that they are “destined to do this forever,” Zayn and Owens have been at each other’s throats since Zayn returned to WWE during January’s Royal Rumble Match, in which he ejected The Prizefighter. Before that, the last time the two had met was in NXT the year before, where they warred over the NXT Championship.

The Underdog from the Underground then helped spoil KO-Mania, collapsing Owens with an insane suplex on a ladder which took the defending Intercontinental Champion out of the running and ultimately cost him the title. As retribution, Owens ambushed Zayn the following night, preventing the Superstar from competing in that evening’s WWE World Heavyweight Championship No. 1 Contender’s Fatal 4-Way Match.

The deeply personal ill will between these former best friends goes far beyond what the WWE Universe has observed in recent months. As has been well documented, the fact that Zayn was signed to NXT before Owens seemed to cause resentment; Owens, meanwhile, insists that Zayn simply rode his coattails all these many years.

Given the severity of their conflict, what type of punishment will Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens inflict on each other at WWE Payback, and which Superstar will take one step closer to proving himself the dominant combatant? Watch their years-long rivalry boil over at WWE Payback, live on the award-winning WWE Network Sunday, May 1, at 8 ET/5 PT.
this will be good

This was a great match, apart from the no-selling.

Would it kill these guys to sell during the big go home stretch? Zayn gets destroyed my a massive kick or clothesline, then pops up 15 seconds later to deliver a massive blow, and then Owens does the same thing.

I have to say even Reigns did a better sell job in his match.

Re: Kevin Owens vs Sami Zayn

I love both these guys as wrestlers but Kevin Owens is my boy and i really hope he gets a win and push up the card to start fighting for the world belt soon.

When Seth comes back he WILL be a babyface and so him v Owens for the belt would be a great feud.

Re: Kevin Owens vs Sami Zayn

I honestly hope that they build this up like they did Rollins and Ambrose and go for months with it with tons of build. This is a 10+ year rivalry that has gone from the minor leagues to the biggest stage that there is. Please, WWE, showcase this one!

Re: Kevin Owens vs Sami Zayn

The potential of a continuation to their long-running rivalry is exciting, am keen to see if it develops into stipulations or even an unexpected swerve where they team-up against common enemies like maybe Anderson/Gallows?

The rivalry for this match sucks... None of the fans have any idea why they hate each other.. All they know is Sami Zayn is some random guy coming up from NXT and they don't like each other.

Hopefully its over after Payback.

The first of many singles matches that these two are going to have together in WWE and they've probably already wrestled each other a couple hundred times.

They've been feuding with each other consistently in all different wrestling companies (with the exception of like 3 months) since the end of 2009 I think. It's so cool that they finally get to do this in WWE.

I wish they had a Mania singles match together but just seeing the ring clear at the start of their match was an amazing sight for me as I've been in crowds of 1,000 people watching them fight and then I got to be in a crowd of 100,000 watching the same 2 guys fight.

This should be a good match but if I were a betting man I would bet that this doesn't have a pinfall or a submission finish. I think they destroy each other, Sami shows a mean streak that he needs to break out, and then we get a gimmick match at Extreme Rules. Hell I wouldn't be shocked if Extreme Rules ended in a double count out in a last man standing match.
