Alberto Del Rio and the curse of the babyface in WWE

So when Del Rio first turned face he was doing a fantastic job, even getting the types of fans who cheer for mainly heels to buy into him and cheer him. The booking was brilliant. As were his matches. It was refreshing to see a character change for him after his bland heel persona which never got a reaction.

However it seems recently that he's going down the path to becoming another typical babyface in WWE. The video with him and Ricardo pretending to be Swagger and Coulter was terrible. Plus some of his jokes have been corny and dumb.

When he was first turned I was expecting this to happen eventually and it's sad to see because the types of faces the WWE have in 2013 are not likable. Del Rio isn't as bad as Sheamus, Cena etc yet. But it looks like it won't be long before he is another cookie-cutter face.

I've been saying this for a while now, great thread. Repped.

Del Rio was only very over in Hispanic-heavy areas when he first turned, people barely cheer him in places like the midwest.

People got very ahead of themselves on this forum.

Exactly what I'm thinking. I remember, when he first turned, he had some scenes like the Ricardo and car keys segment before Ricardo's match with Big Show, but now he's reminding me of all other faces, just cutting crappy jokes and getting generic cheers for some catchphrase.

I'll agree. I do like Del Rio as a face more than when he was a heel - mainly due to his face moveset - but he's almost grinding to a halt in terms of momentum at the moment. The comedy stuff is just garbage. Like you said OP, he's basically going the way of Sheamus - badass face to begin with, then just turning into a smiley, corny, joke-cutting face.

He's definitely not been as good over the last few weeks. Hopefully the feud with Swagger can develop well and they can give us a solid match at 'Mania, to get Del Rio back in everyone's 'good books'.

These segments are poor and Ricardo needs to go.

Are you surprised really? They took Sheamus, a humorless ass-kicker, and turned him into Barney The Dinosaur. The fucking writers are retarded.

I didn't think the Zeb/Swag-mocking video was too bad at first, but it felt like it was 20 minutes long and quickly just ran itself into the ground.

If ADR keeps up the goofy babyface shtick, I'm afraid I'll have to go right back to hating him. I really thought he was a breath of fresh air during his first few weeks after turning, but it's becoming more and more evident he's just going to be Mexican-Cena, just as Sheamus is Irish-Cena. As more people go the goofy route, it really makes Orton stand out (and I haven't cared for Orton in a long, long time). As boring and uninspired as his work may be, it's almost as if doing absolutely nothing with him in years has been for the best since he hasn't been turned into the joke-telling, ass-kissing, hometown-cheering face.
