I thought the reason Alberto won it when he did was twofold:

1) Recently turned face, and he needed a big moment on TV where more fans could see for free

2) The win came during a stretch where WWE is stopping in Florida, Texas, etc... essentially Southern cities with more of a Latino fanbase than places like, say, Minnesota or Cleveland. They may have been hopeful that Del Rio could get a warm face response in front of these fans (which he did), and hope that this kind of treatment follows him as WWE tours further North, away from the friendly audience.

Just my theory though.

Very strange how no other news sources picked up on the story.

If this is true, what Big Show did was actually genius. Yes, he lost a title that no one cares about and WWE treats horribly in booking. However, he also probably got a much better deal than what he was originally offered. He's over 40 now and well into the veteran stage and because of it, it's easy to give him a terrible contract unless Big Show threatens to abandon WWE and take himself elsewhere.

Mark Henry is reportedly facing a similar problem as he's threatening retirement since they are trying to lowball him in his new contract. The difference here is that I think Mark Henry will walk and WWE will let him go. They don't have the same loyalty towards him as they do Big Show.

Del Rio as a focus is going to further push Smackdown into irrelevancy. The crowd doesn't care about him and he's not capable of leading a brand or being the main focus.

So something goes wrong and instead of capitalizing on it and pushing someone else, they go back to someone whose been with the company for less time than most and is already a 3 times champion, WWE need to stop playing it safe.

Isn't Henry thinking about retirement anyways? Due to his injuries and wanting more time with family or something

So the chain of events was:

Show: I'm not signing
Vince: Fuck you, your not my champion anymore.
Show: Fine, I'll sign. Just don't strip me.
Vince: Too late, fuck you.
Show: ....I'll sign anyway.

What a crude businessman.

As long as Show's still around.

Well if the story is true that's it for Big Show. Main eventing is now over. They'll wrap the story up and that will be the last we'll see of him challenging for a main event title, in my opinion. Vince doesn't forget this type of shit.

Even in old senile age, he won't forget it.
