Re: WWE '12
I've followed those Q&A videos on YT, as well as Cory Ledesma's twitter, and tbh I'm disappointed with the information we have so far.
Their main (and if I may say so, their ONLY focus) focus is the gameplay, and it looks like they just went to upgrade the gameplay on the same old SvR game core. That game series didn't feel fresh for several years and now instead of making a completely new engine for the PS3/X360 gen consoles they still rely on the same old PS2 build. Maybe I see things wrong, but in comparison with other games I've come to conclusion that the same build can't work effectively for such a long time span, and over the course of 2 generation of consoles.
Look at other games that went to build the game from scratch like FIFA & NHL (those are nice examples of annual games), they went in 09 (not sure, or 08 but whatever...) completely new way, abolished the old engine and went out to maximize the power of new consoles. Today you have FIFA 11 miles better than their counterpart PES 2011 (they kept the same old engine and "revolutionize" it every year).
Beside the core gameplay, I'm not sold how this game looks like graphically, the wrestler models look so unreal, cartoonish in comparison with other sports games and their graphics, and everything around the wrestlers seems to be stuck at same graphical level as it was in '08 or '09. Heck even then you would say: "Screw PS3 graphics, I'm gonna play SvR on PS2, there's not much of a difference". This game must look better than these videos & screenshots show ATM.
RTWM is a nice mode and everything but the mode is so "small" and limited in comparison to what we used to have on PS2 WWE games like HCTP or KYR. I don't want to be limited to 5 wrestlers on a 2-3 month trip to Wrestlemania, I want the good old experience I had playing full WWE calendar (sometimes for several years, not just 1), I want to have options, to make decisions in my path through the WWE Universe, to actually have the possibility to lose a match, lose a main event of a PPV, and then drop out of Main Event title picture and focus on tag titles or something else. These options/variety/length kept me focused on older games for a long time period, not some crappy linear story with 5 wrestlers, and then out of those 5 it happens that I don't even care for 2-3 of them and have no interest to play on their path of dominance (win a 1on 3, win Royal Rumble entering 1st, win another handicap, beat in 2 min him, win another handicap, fight with stamina at 30%, win another handicap...). If I wanted to beat the odds night in night out I would put my imaginary Rey Mysterio mask and YouTube his wins over foot taller and 150 pound heavier guys...
WWE Universe mode or whatever it's called is a nice idea on paper, kinda the combination of GM mode and Career mode (somewhat) but it isn't neither of those 2, and is limited in options, and overall is a bigger clusterfuck than when you watch the opening promo for weekly SmackDown episodes, when there are 4+ guys demanding stuff and Holla Holla Playa jumps in to make it a tag team main event.
I have a feeling that I feel exactly the same upon the release of a new WWE game, and so do other people. You point out bad things, hope for improvements but the end result is always the same... I could copy/paste this same post for every year over last 4-5 years and my post would be spot on what's wrong with this game series.
