Some people want the Xbone policies back
Quote:
A Change.org petition calling on Microsoft to reinstate its controversial Xbox One policies is gaining steam. The online petition currently has more than 18,000 supporters, up from just over 1,000 only two days ago.

The petition is boosting traffic for Change.org, a representative for the site told GameSpot. The campaign is the "most active" petition on the site right now, with a full 4 percent of all people visiting Change.org viewing the petition, the representative said.

"This was to be the future of entertainment. A new wave of gaming where you could buy games digitally, then trade, share or sell those digital licenses," the petition reads. "Essentially, it was Steam for Xbox. But consumers were uninformed, and railed [sic] against it, and it was taken away because Sony took advantage of consumers [sic] uncertainty."

Under the terms of Microsoft's original Xbox One policies, users were required to connect to the Internet once per day. In addition, secondhand sales saw various limitations.

Microsoft has yet to publicly acknowledge the petition.

When Microsoft reversed these policies last month, the company also ditched the Xbox One's family sharing plan--which was to allow users to share their games library with up to 10 family members on any Xbox One.

At least with it always being online it opened the door for new possibilities. Right now the XB1 just looks like a more expensive PS4 with a gimmick peripheral.

Original Story:

A new report sheds light on the depth of interaction between Microsoft and the NSA's Prism spy program. The report alleges that the Redmond, Washington company collected and/or enabled the collection of private emails and Skype transmissions.

According to the report England's Guardian newspaper, in addition to unencrypted Outlook.com email and SkyDrive files, the NSA has been collecting Skype calls since February 2011 the NSA has been collecting Skype video since June 2012 and audio as early as November 2010 (see update above). As you might recall, Skype is the software that powers chat on Xbox One.

Additionally, Microsoft confirmed that the Xbox One will require the Kinect to be on in order to function. The camera and microphone bundle also offers a standby mode so that users can activate the console by voice at any time. Microsoft has also stated that the Kinect can be set to different power states so that it can be fully powered down when not in use. We approached Microsoft for comment on the allegations.

“We have clear principles which guide the response across our entire company to government demands for customer information for both law enforcement and national security issues," a Microsoft representative told Game Informer. "First, we take our commitments to our customers and to compliance with applicable law very seriously, so we provide customer data only in response to legal processes. Second, our compliance team examines all demands very closely, and we reject them if we believe they aren’t valid. Third, we only ever comply with orders about specific accounts or identifiers, and we would not respond to the kind of blanket orders discussed in the press over the past few weeks, as the volumes documented in our most recent disclosure clearly illustrate."

"To be clear, Microsoft does not provide any government with blanket or direct access to SkyDrive, Outlook.com, Skype or any Microsoft product. Finally when we upgrade or update products legal obligations may in some circumstances require that we maintain the ability to provide information in response to a law enforcement or national security request. There are aspects of this debate that we wish we were able to discuss more freely. That’s why we’ve argued for additional transparency that would help everyone understand and debate these important issues.”

The details presented today follow earlier reports in the Guardian and Washington Post that also accuse Apple, Google, Facebook, and Yahoo of being complicit in the Prism spy program.
Quote:
Update: The Guardian has revised its story from yesterday regarding Prism, the NSA's spying program and services owned and operated by Microsoft. The changes are important as they deal directly with the timing of Skype participation and changes to how it was incorporated into the surveillance network.

According to the new information, Skype monitoring started in earnest in early February 2011 after the company received directive from the United States Attorney General's office. Microsoft's Skype acquisition was announced in May 2011. The Guardian report has also been revised to reflect that no changes were made to Skype in June 2012. Last year, Skype came under fire due to allegations that changes enabled further surveillance. These were denied in a blog post by Mark Gillet, Skype vice president at Microsoft.

I see no reason to purchase an Xbox One over a PS4.

My console chronology has gone PS1>PS2>360>PS3 & I will stick with Sony after becoming recently accustomed to and predominantly now use the PS3, despite also owning the 360 which I had used consistently for around 6 years prior. Microsoft just aren't worth the cash anymore.

The negatives of the Xbox One completely overpower it as the purchasable choice unless you are some sort of masochist or a complete fanboy.

What if you want it for more then just games? Will the ps4 have things? Yes, but not as much as the Xbox one.
the ps4 is a gaming colse, the Xbox one is an entertainment hub.

So what makes the PS4 so much better than the XB1?

Are you actually serious? Okay then lets start with the facts:

- 100$/£70 cheaper
- Again, PSN+ is a cheaper subscription than Xbox Live by around £8/$10 on average for a year fee
- Not embroiled in viewing based privacy concerns (PRISM,NSA) like the Xbox One with it's Kinect gimmick
- To expand on the Kinect another problem is and it has been confirmed - 'Kinect could detect how many users are in the room and could serve advertisements aimed at families, groups, or individuals.'
- Ships with a free headset, whereas the Xbox One does not
- It is 40% smaller than the Xbox making it more versatile for room placement
- Removable/upgradeable hard drive, unlike Xbox
- Sony has better high end critically acclaimed game exclusives, and MUCH more of them - http://uk.ign.com/blogs/bravo.4/2013...dated-3202013/
- The PS4 is easier to develop for, for many reasons including; Sony allows indie developers to self publish, whereas Microsoft does not - http://www.wired.com/gamelife/2013/04/sony-indies/
- The PS4 has factually better specs: About 300 more GPU cores, .6 more Terraflops, about 3000MHz more in system memory and over 100Gb/s more in System Memory Bandwidth
- No extra charge for services like Netflix on the PS4 i.e. you don't require PSN+ to use services like Netflix, whereas with the Xbox, a Gold subscription is necessary to use these services
- Allows you to connect and cross play with a PSVita meaning you can continue to play games without requiring your PS4. Microsoft has no service like such.
- No home screen advertising on the PS4 once you pay for PS+. The Xbox dashboard will still advertise to you despite you having already paid a subscription fee for Gold.

Everything above is factual, so I ask again, was your question meant to be taken seriously?

I will list below my opinions on why I think the PS4 is better subjectively, and I'm not some Sony fanboy because I owned and used a 360 for 6 years, but here goes:

- The PS4 is made and based towards gaming. I am a gamer who wants a gaming console, not a media device.
- Personally think the PS4 has better developers. Halo and Gears have been beat to death, whereas Sony prove with exclusive games such as The Last Of Us, that they are still the top dog.
- The RROD still leaves a bitter taste in my mouth.
- Now PS4 has cross game chat my only main reason to stick with the Xbox has gone.
- I don't want a Kinect, never have, never will and to have it mandatory repulses me.
- Microsoft trying to impose DRM, region locks and forced online is just a bitter slap in the face to millions of people including yours truly. Sony didn't try and impose this nonsense so they are more credible in my eyes. Microsoft only changed things when pre-orders tanked.
- Everyone I know is also jumping ship to PS4.

So in summary how does ALL of that get outweighed by anything positive the Xbox has? It simply doesn't in any way shape or form.
