Smart for the company, but bad for the consumers. I don't see a big need for a new generation of consoles. You could still ride this gen a few more years. All I'm really seeing is a more powerful product with douchey, money hungry features.
I will say though, if Microsoft follows though with this, Sony would be smart to NOT do it. It could mean the difference in a sale. Microsoft may be underestimating the draw of used games. Most gamers range between ages of 14-24 and I don't know many high school/college students who can continually dish out $60 for games. You could also make the argument that if a person may be more willing to buy a new copy of the next installment of a game series if they can get their hands on a cheap copy of a previous installment. Like, buying GOW3 for $10 allowing you to become a fan of the game and anticipating Judgement and buying on release day or whatever.
I'll commit to Sony again if Microsoft follows through and Sony doesn't follow suit.
Edit: I also want backwards compatibility not only for 360/PS3 games, but also PS2/PS1/original Xbox games.

If all you buy is used games, chances are that Microsoft and Sony really dont care about you as a customer because outside of the console, which they take a loss on, they get no cash out of you.
Used sales do not actually go to the developer/ corporation. Sony relies on first party game sales to make up the loss on their consoles and MS uses XBL sales to make up their loss.

just a simple question, kind of along the lines in the other thread about physical games going by the wayside....do you use steam? are you ok with the fact that when you buy a game on steam, you cant share it with anyone else?

Re: New Xbox - No more used games, require Internet to play
So I am not able to play a game that I borrow from a friend anymore since I would have to activate it? If that is what I am getting from this then screw that. I sure hope Sony isn't entirely like this as well. Maybe Steambox is the way to go who knows.

That is why they are doing this. Many people fail to realize that sure you buy a game, but if it is used, the developer is only seeing the sale from the first owner. So, they will lose sales because people are no longer going to pay full amount for a game, but wait for the pre-owned version. Add in that the dangers of pre-owned are over thanks to discs not being as scratched as they used.
The only issue I really have is the internet always being on to use. I do have broadband, but it is not the best, only thing offered in my area. So, I would rather not use my internet unless I was playing online. Add that many people maybe have caps on their internet, and if they are playing a game, this could eat up the limited cap of bandwidth.

This is why developers should use the club Nintendo approach. Buy a first party game new, get points. Save enough points, get some swag or a game free at the end of the year.
Instead these companies would rather screw over the customers with online codes so that when my Xbox or PS3 craps out, I cant play the game I paid full price for online, unless of course I pay the developer more cash.
I cant tell you the amount of games I've passed on because of codes. I'd gladly have paid for the new game, but the codes are just horrible. (Every EA published game, except Mass Effect 3. Which I wish I skipped.)

if you're buying the game new, why does the code bit matter? you get a code with every NEW EA game. Are people even aware of how ignorant theyre being regarding this change? It sounds like a whole lot of complaining just for complaining's sake.

Re: New Xbox - No more used games, require Internet to play
The code ties the game to your account. However, consoles like PS3 have an account sharing limit for consoles, I think its two now. Thus if two PS3 crap out on me over console generation or I upgrade from the fat PS3 to the slim, from the slim to ultra slim, that game is now rendered irrelevant until I pay for a new online code.

I am not paying for a full price game that I may finish within a week or so or dislike so much I would return it for something else. Rentals, second hand, sales on games and friends lending games to each other would all be gone. Gaming would take a huge drop in sales if both consoles do this and dont whine on about pc or comparing it to steam

Not just first party, second and third too.
But trust me, most of the used Wii/DS/3DS games I've bought still had the Club Nintendo codes. Most people don't use it or know about it.
Also, you're making incorrect statements regarding online codes and profile transferring.
