They're probably trying to get the right type of nature for that Pokemon to either raise or breed with (so they can pass that nature down to the baby). Some people care about natures because it can make a Pokemon stronger in a certain stat, for example an Adamant natured Hitmonlee will have more attack than a Docile natured Hitmonlee. The Adamant nature raises Hitmonlee's attack stat, and lowers Hitmonlee's special attack stat which doesn't matter because Hitmonlee's special attack sucks and it never uses special moves. Natures are a lot more important for people who play competitive Wifi battles, but it's not really important for the main story. I personally care about natures and EV training when I play through the story because it's just something else to do and I want the Pokemon I raise to be as strong as they can be.
