Pikachu in the anime is like Cena in WWE. Loses once or twice, gets a little angry, trains some more and then comes back to destroy the big bad Pokemon. If Pikachu was like that in the games, Gen 1 wouldn't be anywhere near as difficult as it was which would be pretty boring.
You really need to stop trying to compare the Anime and the Game. The Anime battles are made to be exciting and showcase as many of the pokemon's moves as possible and show random effects and weird combinations. (Check Ash using some weird counter shield thing against Fantina in the Hearthome Gym Battles) The game is meant to be the basics. No weird combos, no "Pikachu, Dodge!".. The Anime makes as little sense battling wise at the best of times anyways.. (Pikachu using Thunder on itself and Swellow which, instead of knocking Swellow out, raised their Speed & Attack!
yeah the anime has plenty of stupid stuff that i'll probably comment on later on
i know it started with the game first in japan but still us westerners got the anime before the game if it were the other way around like in japan it would be a different issue
Where's the fun in playing a game where you Level up quickly or just wipe out gyms with ease.. Leveling up to face someone like Red in Gen 2 and the remakes was irritating, but really worth it in the end. You don't want to grind? Stock up on Revives & Potions.. Pretty simple in the end.
Red? from Silver/Gold/Crystal? He was at the very end of the game, after doing all the classic gyms, by then the leveling was a non issue, at least for me
in the middle of a battle you need to skip a turn to use potions and revives, making it fruitless is a lot of cases or if like the stradegy is stalling or getting someone in your party to take the hit/fall so someone else can get healed
its about flow, catching the pokemon is one thing but the trainer battles are the important stuff and i would just want to go to them as quickly as possible once the catching in the area is done then get to the boss battles with as little repitition as possible
but the leveling up and the moves that make the differance only comes from constant grind for most of the creatures
its too bad you can't catch wild pokemon after they faint, ANOTHER THING THE ANIME GOT RIGHT OVER THE GAME BY THE WAY
