Not happening. Nintendo beat Sega in the console wars and as the victor, got the loser(Sega) to make games for its(Nintendo) consoles. Sega is making too much money releasing its games for Nintendo. If they want to go into the hardware business again, that means not being under the protective wing of Nintendo and potentially going bankrupt if they fail(again).

I'm not a huge sega fan as the only games I liked playing were Sonic and Aladdin....However if others love it then sure, hope something happens for the fans. however in my opinion I highly doubt they will be with the low sales of Playstation consoles and Nintendo 3DS consoles. I think making a new Sega console would be a poor choice...instead they could just partner with Nintendo and make some games there instead of making a third console that some people don't have the money to buy. I intend to buy a new console next year, but it will either be the Wii U or PS3 (for the new games), if they made a new sega platform I wouldn't even think of buying it, but again that's just me

Sega always had good third party support so people that say why not just play Sega games on Nintendo dont really get it.Also read the thread title its not a matter of will it happen

No they didn't always. In fact they pissed off most of their third party support after abandoning support for the Saturn almost immediately after its release. EA refused to make games for the Dreamcast hence the 2k series we see today.

Also and the thing some of you fail to grasp is that the third party support that they had are now the third party support for XBOX/PS3. Every game these days come out for both systems unless its made by Microsoft or Sony. Therefore if a new Sega console comes out you will get games that come out for every other system plus the current games that Sega make anyway. Nothing changes at all and if think it will then you don't really get it.

EA was the exception and what you don't grasp is more consoles=more opportunities for 3rd party developers

I don't think SEGA will ever hit the console market again. The Dreamcast was an awesome system but it and its exclusives vastly undersold their expectations. SEGA has been making big capital profits, but the cost of entering the market and risk of failure are both massive. The three conglomerates in MicroSoft, Sony, Nintendo have all been around for years. Nintendo caters to the casual gamer market(The market APPLE will go if they ever decide to enter console gaming). Microsoft and Sony are in complete competition with each other. But let us remember, most games are shared between consoles and only the exclusives are not. The exclusive franchises are big selling factors for consoles, and to be quite honest, SEGA are already producing what would be their exclusive titles if they made a console, for 3 very big established consoles.
Finally to add to that, a lot of their partners and support they had back in the 90s, are now with one of the big 3. That makes things harder to set up too. There is just no real reason for them to risk it. They are making a lot of profit already.Instead of a new console, I would simply prefer if they revive the old game series exclusives they had such as Shenmue etc.

Sega is still struggling to make decent Sonic games after the Dreamcast. They couldn't handle the console war if they tried to re-enter the fray.

Sega's business model is assbackwards these days. Being software only was the smartest thing they could have done.
